I had some minor surgery today, however there was an amusing twist to the day. Copy and pasted from my blog:

So as I mentioned in the previous post, my consultant decided I needed surgery on my knee. The procedure is called arthroscopy.

So I got the bus down to the hospital for the surgery. It is minor day surgery, albeit with a general anaesthetic.

I had a private room, and was just relaxing waiting for the nurses to prep me. The nurse came in and gave me the surgical gown and a few other bits and bobs, then left to let me get ready. I put on my surgical gown fine (no - I didn't put it on back to front!) and put on a hairnet and a single TED stocking.

I then lay there watching TV for a while, waiting for the consultant. While I was waiting, the nurse popped in once or twice to see I was ok.

After a short while, my consultant came in with the senior physiotherapist. The consultant kind of gave me an odd look when he came in and said something about "new hospital policy". I wasn't sure what he meant, but then lay there listening as he and the physio described some of the aspects of the surgery and recovery.

Towards the end I asked him if I really needed to wear the hairnet for the operation.

"That's not a hairnet," he replied, "that's your pants!"

OH SH*T!

Yes - I was sitting there in front of my consultant and the senior physiotherapist... with my surgery pants on my head!

So I then burst out laughing, as did the consultant and physio. I was laughing so hard that I strained a muscle in my neck. They had quite impressively managed to be completely serious with me till that point. The consultant had thought someone was playing a joke on him ("new policy"), then when I didn't take them off, figured he would let the physio explain to me once he had left.

As I said to them - I had wondered why it had a hole in the top, but thought it maybe doubled as a beard net too. I didn't notice that it had two holes (for me legs!).

To say I was embarrassed would be a slight understatement.

Even once they left I kept bursting into spontaneous laughter every time I thought of it.

I have since told this story to anyone who will listen, and pretty much everyone is reduced near to tears!

So anyway, I've now had the surgery. The consultant thinks he found the problem and has sorted it. I am now off my feet for a couple of days, and hopefully in a few weeks my knee will be back to 100% normality!

Just goes to show, a doctor of science certainly isn't the same as a doctor of medicine. Suprised the consultant didn't ask if they were sure it was your knee they were operating on and not your head... Laughing

Yeah he did comment about putting "mental state uncertain" in my medical notes! Laughing

a few weeks? LMFAO!!!

Heres the truth about knee surgery:
Once they have buggered about with it, it will NEVER be like it was before. It might be as close as 90% but thats VERY rare.... if ya get 75% consider yourself lucky....

I have to have the same procedure to determine wither or not I need cartilage removed, as I cant have MRI due to the screws in my leg. How sore is it afterwards? Recovery time is a few days yea?

OK - a few weeks was a bit optimistic.

My procedure was fairly minor. There wasn't that much damage to remove and compared to what it was like to more it will surely be an improvement.

It was causing problems with running and hiking. Now I'm happy to give up running because I hate it anyway, but previously I could not do a long hike without ending in pain. As long as I get over that I am happy.

I reckon 95% is realistic. My current boss is actually a former consultant orthapaedic surgeon, so I've had all this from him too! Wink

Well they gave me some painkillers for the post-surgical pain but tbh I never felt any pain from the procedure. I have general stiffness in the knee and some swelling but nothing major.

No - recovery time is not a few days. I had my op last Thursday and stupidly thought I would be back on the bike on Monday. Laughing

I might try the bike on Thursday for the first time, but you are best to take at least a week off work (or work from home if you can). That is assuming your work is desk based - if it is manual you may need a few weeks.

You _can_ walk straight after the op, but not much. You will be heavily bandaged on the knee. That comes off after a couple of days then you use a tubi grip and have to start doing physio to strengthen the knee. You are also meant to wear TED stockings to prevent DVT. I am still heavily limping and expect it will be a few weeks before walking is back to normal.

The actual work done in my knee was fairly minor so it would vary depending on what you get done. If they can they will try to do the necessary work while they are looking. My problem was that they could not see any problems on the MRI scan.

Laughing I got a text from my brother last night telling me that he kept on getting giggling fits thinking about it as he was driving up to Peterhead last night.

Laughing I got a text from my brother last night telling me that he kept on getting giggling fits thinking about it as he was driving up to Peterhead last night.

Ok 4th attempt I may get through it but somehow I dont think I will.
edit: I havnt laughed like this since my mate got her hand stuck in a letter box for hours and had to get the fire bragade to cut her out while the whole street laughed at her. Laughing

I was able to walk straight away. Just not very well. I didn't need crutches or anything.

I reckon I'll be on the bike Thursday/Friday so 7 days would be about right.

I do think I'm one of those people that has trouble giving up a limp though!

Damn you ZRX61 you were right!

My knee is totally screwed since the surgery. I can hardly walk now. Turns out they didn't really find anything really in the operation.

It seems that it is more a combination of tight hips, dodgy knee caps, one leg being shorter than the other and bad gait which has combined to give me aches and pains. I am amzed I ever managed to walk! This really sucks!

My knee is still swollen and I have a whole new set of exercise to try and help. I will be seeing the Podiatrist and will probably get an orthotic.

Update for me:

Still feels bad in certain positions - however I'm beating my previous max deadlift and leg press, haven't done any heavy squatting though.

Full ROM aswell and it clicks less, and no longer painful when it does.

You will probably told to do stretches and cure muscle imbalances.

It can be brought back to not having as much pain, possibly even as good as new, but will require daily stretching on your part. Doing set bodyweight excercises to alter muscle imabalances will help as well, something like Yoga will cover all of the necessary things.
