Hi all!

Is there any websites or other way to find out the year of an engine using the VIN. Would you also be able to find out stuff like mileage etc.

Not from the VIN although you can find out the year of the engine from the engine number. Wink

You may be able to find out the mileage from the VIN as you have the option to write it down on the V5 when it changes hands, but maybe people don't as it's only optional, and it won't be particularly accurate.

If it's a bike you're considering buying an HPI check is probably a better idea.

the gearbox went in my CG and it was easier and cheaper just to stick a different engine in so got a used engine quite cheap of a broker but as he received it with no clocks or records he couldn't tell me the year or mileage so i was just interested.

When you phone up companies that sell parts they sometimes ask for the VIN to verify you've told them the right year and model so i was guessing they have access to it?? otherwise why would they want it?

They don't check the VIN against a database that contains all the details though.

Haynes manuals have "templates" for each VIN and what year each VIN is. That's the only reason, it's a double check method. On bikes of the same year and model only the last 6/7 digits are unique to your bike, the rest tells people what year that model is. Also you may have an import or a late registered bike, but the VIN would give you its true age.

The first thing to do when dating an engine is to send it flowers, in my experience.
