Yesterday G and I made a van journey to view a bike. I ended up returning with the bike. Here's a pic:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/ypvs.jpg

Can you guess what it is yet? Wink

I paid the princely sum of 525 magic beans. It doesn't have an MOT but it is in generally good order. It runs, but I haven't managed to get it to run long enough to ride it. It needs a bit of work, I think the carbs need cleaning. I also discovered that underneath the power valve pulley cover... there is no power valve pulley! I tried to turn the power valve using a spanner, and it did not turn. I believe in order to get the power valve working it will need a strip and clean.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/ypvs2.jpg

For the MOT It will definately need fork seals, a new battery and possibly some other odds and ends like a rear brake strip and clean. I'm not 100% on the electrics but I'm waiting for the new battery before I can fully test them.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/ypvs3.jpg

All in all I'm fairly pleased. I've got me a winter project which does run, doesn't need too much work for an MOT and is a legendary RD350 YPVS! Very Happy

Similar problems to my TZR. Fork seals and rear brake rebuild in order to get it M.O.T-able.

Looks good and not bad for £525 Thumbs Up

Nice and tidy. But if you want something really different, how about this? I can guarantee you wont park up at your local bike meet and see another.

My dad saw this at I think the Stalybridge motorcycle show.

I believe that the frame has not been modified and 2 cylinders can be taken off the engine to bring it back to a standard engine.

Not entirely sure though.

Looks absolutely mental though Twisted Evil

RD500?!!?? The Suzuki RG500 kicks the RDs arse. With it's square 4 engine it just sound brilliant. Yamaha weren't the gods of 2 strokes Wink but they were pretty damn close

An RD350E or a is it one of the older ones?

If it's a 350E they are unbelievably rare. Google comes up with nothing. Probably because the price difference between the 350 and 400 was so small that everyone opted for the 400.

I had a RD350N similar to yours, watch out with the side stand they have a habit of snapping at the weld to the frame, and the foot pegs cut though flesh quite easily as the 6" scar on my knee shows Laughing

I've got the servo, servo horn, the cables and the valves, I just don't have the pulley from the end of the powervalves. I don't think one from a DT125 will fit, but its OK I'm sure I'll find one somewhere.

I'm planning to do a bit of work on the bike soon, and I will try to document my efforts. I've ordered some bits for it which include a clutch cable, air filter, battery, plugs, Haynes Manual Smile , levers, fork seals and fork seal dust covers. I think I will do a top end rebuild, strip the powervalves and clean the carbs out at some point too. I also suspect the tank will need cleaning and sealing as it is full of rust. The Brake fluid is black, so braided hoses and a fluid change might be an option too.

This is going to be fun!! Very Happy

Well, I've been told I've been doing too much showing and not enough telling, so here goes.

I started work on the YPVS on Saturday and I started by removing the seat, tail unit and tank. I had ordered various service parts for the bike including new plugs, new air filter, new levers, new battery and other stuff and it all arrived on Friday.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/dsc01253_142.jpg

I started with the air filter. I removed the airbox cover and discovered this: Surprised

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/dsc01250.jpg

In the bottom of the airbox was a load of petals from some flower, a few flies and bits of foam. I decided that I had better not run the bike again until I could be sure this would not be sucked into the engine, so I had to put the bike away temporarily so that I could walk back around to my house to collect my vacuum cleaner! After tripping the power breakers in my garage about eight times, and trying different combinations and orders of switch-on, I managed to get it running for long enough to remove the debris from the airbox.

I also had a look at the fuses. Big mistake:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/dsc01249.jpg

This is really the worst bit of the bike apart from the seized power valves. Someone has done a real bodge job on that! Well, I just figured if it aint broke... it may need dealing with soon but at the moment it can stay as it is. After I had replaced the air filter I removed the spark plugs and performed a compression test. According to my compression tester each cylinder is just above 6 bar which I think is about right for this bike. I then replaced the spark plugs.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/dsc01252.jpg

Here are the old ones. A bit black, and a bit rusty!
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/dsc01251.jpg

While I had been doing this I was also preparing my new battery. I had filled it with acid as described and had left it for half an hour as instructed. Once I'd finished putting the plugs into place I cracked on with replacing the battery. It was fairly straightforward except I snapped the battery strap. The usual BCF answer prevailed of course; a cable tie!

With the battery in position and the terminals freshly copper greased, it was time to switch on the ignition. I pulled out the trusty multi meter and measured the voltage across the battery. 13.6v. Bearing in mind I bought the bike without testing any of the electrics, and that my Optimate won't even register the old battery as being able to conduct electricity I crossed my fingers, held my breath and closed my eyes. I then turned the key...

Bzzzz Bzzzz Bzzzzzzzz! The YPVS servo burst into life to my joy! I figured that now was the time to see if the bike would run, so I gave it a bit of choke and a swift kick. The bike burst straight into life!! Very Happy My garage immediately filled with sweet smelling thick white smoke. I had run the bike before, but it didn't run very well and immediately died. With the new plugs in place it ran sweetly, picking up well with a little throttle.

As you can see from the pictures at the top of the thread, my bike was also missing the infil panels from beneath the headstock. I found some on fleabay for the princely sum of £9.99. I noticed that the guy selling them was a YPVS breaker so I emailed him about my missing PV pulley. He replied almost immediately saying he had one and he was going to bung it in with my side panels! I was very happy indeed! Very Happy

Here is a dark shot of the infil panel fitted
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/dsc01247.jpg

and here is my shiney new pulley:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/dsc01248.jpg

I then tested the electrics and found that they all work apart from the horn. I was pleased, but I know that the horn might be a pain in the butt. This means that for the MOT I just need to replace the fork seals, fix the horn and sort the binding rear brake.

This won't be the end of the project however, because the powervalves still don't turn and I figure that if I'm going to take the barrels off, I may as well do a top end rebuild anyway. I've got myself a top end gasket set, and I plan to get the head skimmed by 1mm. I measured the squish clearance and this came out as 1.9mm. The ideal squish clearance for this bike should be (from other peoples trial and error) between 0.9 and 0.75mm. I don't want to push my luck, so getting 1mm machined off of the head should have the required effect. The bike will also need new tyres, and it may need the rear suspension looking at.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/dsc01255.jpg

I also have a couple of other issues, for example I snapped the light mounting frame, which seemed to have been weakened by rust. I think I should be able to weld it back together though, perhaps with the help of G and his tig welder.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/dsc01246.jpg

considering the minimal amount of work required for the MOT, I'm pretty pleased for £525!

And here is my brood in their little cubby hole:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/dsc01256.jpg

Stay tuned for further updates bat fans! Same bat time, Same bat channel! Mr. Green

Looking good Marjay, apart from the fusebox Wink

Does your powervalve servo buzz 3 times, mine only buzzes twice and watching videos of some 1KTs on Youtube they buzz 3 times Thinking

At least you found an air filter in your airbox, I was greeted with some muck and nothing else Shocked

Will you be changing the upper bushes in the forks as well as the oil seals and dust seals?

Hi

The buzz is it opening and then closing. One buzz for each direction so 2 sounds fine. Might do something strange it the valve is open before the ignition is turned on.

All the best

Unless they are ancient and cracked I reckon you may be alright. I have the sportclassic on my bike (which is what your rear is), and it is fine, honestly. I know they feel rock hard, but they slide progressively and allow good lean.

Plus, you would ruin the charcter by putting super sticky stuff on there.

The front is OK, but the rear is very square and has a slow puncture. I will need to replace them. I wasn't going to fit Supercorsas or anything, I was going to fit BT45s as they were reccommended on the RD forum.

Chives, as kickstart says, once each way. However, on my brothers KR1, on occasion it will do it 3 times, depending on what position it is in when turned off. So if you turn ignition on and off twice, then resume normally, it should do it two times, if I'm not mistaken.

If not, fuck off cos I dont know. Laughing

Looking sweet Marjarine. Im fully trying to immerse myself in the memory of the two stroke sound and smell after reading this!
