Yamaha's just announced some of it's 2009 models...

https://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/mcn/2008/september/8-14/sep0808-yamaha-launch-2009-range-of-moorcycles/

There's a new R1, with a 'big bang' engine, a purple frame and weird eyelids... and they've brought back the Diversion Very Happy

That Divvy looks well swish, It should sell well, looks sporty. Possibly competition for the SV, I like the new R1 too.

The R1 looks like it's got a bit of the ZX10R cross eyed look going on.......

Not impressed Sad

I like the R1... I even like the weird purple frame...

I'm also intrigued by the new divvy, 78bhp is a bit weak, but I guess they had to position it below their FZ6.

What the f. is that R1 about?

When will these manufacturers get it????

Tarts like me prefer a good looking bike to one that looks shit but has slightly better power/weight!!!!!

Come on people! First the blade. Now this!!

I give up, honestly.....

ps. thank god for the 1098 or our kids will rip it out of us for being a generation of "functional but ugly" bikers.

Jesus christ.

Suzuki, please do not ruin the K9 1000 with that stupid a$$ headlight you have dumped onto the 600/750. The rest of the litre bikes are now ridiculously ugly.

Thumbs Down Thumbs Down

The headlights look like they've got thinner which makes it look a little like the R7 at the front which makes sense because the R7 was made to be as aerodynamic as possible as will this new R1.

Personally I like it but if you don't I can't see it being that hard to get the old headlights to fit. I'm not too sure I'm a big fan of that exhaust system though.

Ah bit better looking that some of the unoffical pics of the divvy.

I really wish that they would still use the air cooled engines though. Far prefer them to a water cooled one. But thats the greens and the keep the emissions down... Twisted Evil

WTF? Are you suggesting that this is the only R1 made since the R7 that the designers thought that they would make it as aerodynamic as possible? Mentalist. I don't se ehow the headlights are 'thinner' either - they just don't appear to have a plastic cover over the projector, and they have junked a projector either side.

Not too hard to get the old ones to fit? I would like you to have a blast at trying that - I would have thought it would be a utter PITA, and require significant remodelling of the upper fairing and an associated respray.

Crazy posting.

Interested to hear more on the Big Bang engine though, seems rather radical. Anyone have any details?

I don't think it'd look that bad if it looked anything like this.

Uses a "cross plane" firing order apparently. Each cylinder is set 90 degrees from the other on the crank, instead of being 180 degrees from each.

It's got a pussy switch as well. Sad

Has the Yamaha press release at the bottom. Thumbs Up

I have to say the divvy does look very good, I guess they're going after the CBF. On looks alone the divvy wins that battle! Thumbs Up

As for the R1...What happened there? Yam have gone from making one of the best looking bikes to perhaps one of the ugliest! Shocked I'll hold back major judgement until the bike show but for now...NO TA! Thumbs Down

i fear that may have made the same mistake as kwak did when they replaced the angry 04-05 ZX10r with the 06 and the sales dived.
no doubt its a bloody good bike but the looks are not great.

Interesting. Can't see why you would put on a road bike really, I knew that they did it in MotoGP, and recall the PB boys doing it to a Gixxer 750, but seems like a lot of effort for 'just' a road bike.

Can only think that they have done it to help the WSB/BSB boys.

Bit biased are we? Wink Honestly though I'm just glad that manufacturers are taking this sector more seriously! Not that I'm going to buy one (too skint see) but I'm glad they are! Thumbs Up

They use it in MotoGP to produce bigger gaps bewteen power pulses going through the tyre, allowing it to recover its shape (amongst other things) and maintain better contact patch so improving traction.

Kawasaki did it a lot (think they were the first), and there were many different combinations of firing order - like 2 together, then a big pause, then another two together ad infinitum.

Normal firing order is evenly spaced: 1-1-1-1

Big bang is like: 2--1-1 or 1--2-1, or werid like 121--- etc etc etc.

Useful (think) when on the limit of traction on the track, pretty much irrelevant on the road, I would have thought.
