What do I need for xbox live?

Again thinking of attempting to connect the xbox 360 to the net.

I see the adapter I need. Do I need a hard drive also? I have just a bog standard 360.

And Its more for the other half as I know nothing about them.

You don't *need* the wireless adapter. And to be quite honest, due to Microsoft's incredibly greedy pricing on the wireless adapter, I would heartly recommend doing everything you can to avoid buying the wireless adapter. The Xbox will run perfectly fine through a run-of-the-mill ethernet adapter (bog-standard network cable).

If you don't have the cable length to reach your router, there is another alternative (This is what I used to do). You can connect your Xbox to a wireless enabled laptop (or computer), and connect to the internet through that computer. Therefore giving you all the advantages of a wireless adapter, for none of the cost (only downside is that you have to have said computer / laptop turned on for the xbox to connect to the internet).

Oh, forgot to mention about the Hard Drive.

I can't 100% remember if you need a Hard Drive as such, but I know for certain that you *do* need a memory medium of some sort (IE, a memory stick).

That said, even though the hard drives are also grossly overpriced (lol microsoft), it's worth getting one for the space to download game demo's and movie trailers and shit.

You need a Hard drive or memory unit to store your profile and log in information .

You can pick up a cheap Hard drive on ebay now for about £25 if you look

As above i would avoid microsofts adapter for wifi - you can get a knock off at half the price but that's still thirty quid .
Buy an extra long ethernet cable - they work out about a pound a metre .

You will also need a credit card to sign up for a gold membership

The xbox is upstair and my wireless router downstairs and I aint being inthe same room as the xbox so it can go online (I just got the xbox out of the livingroom as I was sick of having it going inthe background) its not for me. And our lead is not long enough to use. errrmm what way is around that then? I seen cheaper ones on ebay the wireless adapters but was dubious of them.

Is it because we have no hard drive that we cant copy music on the xbox?

why would a wifi normal adapter not work if? I have one of them. I know someone said it woldnt before. But if i get a cheaper althernative for xbox is that not the same?

Or you could wait and bid on one .

As for the wire , if possible you can run it through the house - like through the ceiling and through the floorboards upstairs ? this is the way i have mine and it's very simple to do .
An ethrnet cable which is bigger will cost you about a quid a metre or you can buy an extension for the one you already have

This all means that I will havethe tv back in the livingroom and not have to watch mind numbing games in the background. I say that now as he isnt planted beside me asking to ask everyone here how it works. I'd just get the wireless adaptor.

Or, get a cheap 'WRT54GL' from eBay. install custom firmware 'Tomato' on it, and set that up as a 'Wireless Ethernet Bridge' and then connect the router to your wireless network, you then plug this into your Xbox with a small length of network cable.

The bonus is that the WRT54GL is a very versatile piece of kit, you can boost the wireless signal/processing power and it has many other uses other than just giving your xbox an internet connection.

If you do decide to go that route, it's pretty easy to do, and probably about half the price of the wireless gaming adaptor.

(I've recently done this as I had a router lying around I didn't need, and wanted to stop having to hack up ndiswrapper for my Linux distro).
