I seem to have picked up an infection on my personal laptop. I've had infections before, but always been able to locate the problem easily, but I haven't got a clue where this one is, or what it's called.

It's basically a popup IE window, well just an IE frame full size. Some of the websites displayed so far been abcjump, ebay, ladbrokes etc.

I googled abcjump, and some forums were suggesting a program called Combofix will eradicate it, but I'm a bit wary of downloading it. It's not on download.com and I can't find an official site for it using Google. Has anyone here used Combofix.

If not, what other ways can I find out what this Malware is ? I've had a look in processes but nothing seems out of place. I have run an Ad-Aware and Avast scan, but the problem is still there.

Any help appreciated.

lavasoft ad aware (free for personal use, with some restrictions)
Avast antivirus (free for personal use)
UnHackMe (free trial, boot time rootkit killer)

google for em, if you can't find and install and use them with your current skill level i wuld suggest entrusting the job to someone else.

Sorry to sound hacked off but i have just spent most of the day resurecting my daughters laptop that i have no rescue disks for, wouldn't start safemode, and kept rebooting when started in debug, normal or last known good configurations....

windoze...I hate it

After running a netcafe for too long and doing 'tech support' for relatives and colleagues to this day I usually just dug out spyware manually as stuff like adaware and spybot didn't tend to have a particularly good success rate with cutting edge malware.

But I've been dabbling with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware as of late, and so far it's actually been pretty impressive having gotten rid of the problem every last time I've used it. Given that it's free and that one particular malware that was redirecting google searches actively blocked it's website, I'm inclined to trust it Thumbs Up

Malwarebytes as said above been using it ages and its found things the others miss. Superantispyware also is better than Adaware and Spybot S&D, still worth using them all now and again to find things.

What Anti Virus are you using and is it up to date?

Thanks guys, Malwarebytes did the trick. I use Avast, but wasn't able to get rid of this one. Also tried Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware.

It was a wierd virus though. As well as the advertising pop-ups, it also disabled the "Quick Launch" icons from the taskbar. Confused

Anyways, all sorted now so Karma cookies for everyone Laughing

Cheers
