I have finally got round to replacing my stolen Yamaha SR-125 (A bike I owned for TWO days before it was taken from me - still managed to get over 500 miles out of it travelling down to London and back though).

The only thing is, that the Yamma was a 4-stroke engine, all very start it, run it, stop... start it, run it, stop. Now I find myself with Kawasaki KH-125 - only 2-stroke.

Now I can't profess to be much of an engine person, so I'm a little in the dark over the differences between running a 2-stroke and 4-stroke.

Are there certain things I should be changing regularly, topping up, cleaning and checking etc?

One day I will get round to that DA test, but till then, I'm just happy to have a bike back... Bring on the road, and the breeze!

Thanks.

Only difference really is you've got to keep your 2-stroke oil filled up. More than likely there will be a container under the tank and it'll say something obvious like OIL on it. Try and stick to the same kind of 2-stroke thoughout. I use putolene 2-stroke oil. Never had any problems with it and it seems to be a lot less smokier than the other ones I tried. I just give it a top up every 2nd time I refuel. Will cost you about £5 for a litre of it and should do you at least a month.

I'd also suggest giving the bike longer to warm up at the beginning of each day the first time you ride it.

I can't wait to get going on it, tempted to get a job as a courier just so I can spend all day on it Laughing

depending on the state if tune depends on the oil required...
Being an NSR fan here i try to use fully synth when i can but the occasional semi dosnt seem to harm it so I'm going 1 fully, 1 semi (although i am planing a top end rebuild soon).

The two strokes are a gazillion times more simplistic than 4 st's and although they may require a little more attention its hardly difficult.

I would suggest finding a service manual (online maybehaps *whistle*) and have a browse through, lots of good info in thoes.

As for differences, its farily important you keep the 2 stroke oil topped up as the engine oil does not lubricate the piston atall so if you run out of 2t oil then you wont get to far haha.

Warming up, generally speaking i give the bike a minute or two and then just ride gentily for a few minutes untill the engine warms up (luckily the NSR wont rev too high when cold haha).

I'm assuming the engine is resticted?
De-restricted these 125 2t's can make some awesome power for 125's Wink

Best regards

Don't be tempted. Nothing kills the enjoyment of riding a bike quicker than despatching.

Kh125 is in a pretty low state of tune and will probably run on any 2 stroke oil, is not restricted and is good for 65-70 flat out with a tail wind, any more an i found myself in the redline, only thing i did in 2 years and 12000 or so miles was change the oil every 3 or 4 thousand (only 600 ml I think it was) Edit and put 2 stroke oil in it, needed filling up about onces every 4 tanks of fuel and took a little over a litre.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
