Spyware, it has me :(

Computer at home has gone a bit mental.

The desktop background has been changing to a bright read warning you may be infected thing. The clock says virus alert next to it, constant fake anti virus pop ups from something called micro virus and general mayhem.

regedit and task manager have both been locked, my start menu has been messed about with as well. I've ran adaware and despite detecting loads of stuff it doesn't seem to have had any effect.

Help?

Backup your files and reload it. It will take you longer to remove the offending crap than it will to reload.

Sadly not really an option as I don't have the disc with drivers etc.

Removing offending crap is the priority as I can't be arsed hunting for drivers, a copy of XP etc.

You are likely to have lost the will to live by the time you eventually get rid of it.

What you need to do is do a google search on the exact phrase the fake sys tray icon pops up. there should be plenty of sites detailing removal procedures.

One of the likely culprits is XPAntivirus2009.

Try using a restore-point. It's unlikely to work but it does sometimes.

My Aunty had this problem. It was a pain in the arse, it disabled everything kept getting pop ups causing the system to crash.

Malwarebytes anti-malware should get rid of that one. I've cleared that particular problem up on a few pcs with it now

Does Malbytes have to be installed or is it a stand alone program?

I ask because a friend of mine (honestly, it's not me!) has a problem where her Windows installer seems to fail whenever she tries to install/uninstall anything. The laptop is doing nothing else unusual and I haven't found anything with any scans, but as you can imagine it kind of makes the PC fairly useless.

You have to install it so not much use to you sadly.

I'm really impressed with it though, it's the only time I've ever managed to get rid of spyware without resorting to a format.

I wonder if I could install it to a USB stick on my lap[top and then transfer it to hers, it might work if there are no imoprtant registry entries or .dll files. It's got to be worth a try.
