Is anyone here an advanced rider? Is it a good thing to have?
It has been suggested to me by a family friend who is also a police advanced instructor that I do a Rospa advanced test. He has offered to coach me for free.
I have to join Rospa which costs £15 and the final test will cost £50. This doesn’t sound bad as some advanced courses cost hundreds.
Any opinions would be welcome.

If you're being offered free coaching from a Police rider then go for it, definately!

£15 + £50 to learn some techniques that can potentially save your life - sounds good to me.

I don't know about all local authorities but in Gloucestershire they are currently offering 'Bike Safe Courses' for £12 (yes, twelve quid!).

The courses run over 3 concurrent Sundays and are predominantly classroom based with a ride out with a police rider on the final day.

Apparantly they are at present funded by Central Government (hence the low cost) so it may be worth checking out your Local Authorities Road Safety Officer (they all have one although may go under slightly different titles) for further information.

I only came across it because a friend of mine used to be in the traffic police and advised me to get registered. Surely worth £12 of anyone's money if it may improve your skills and possibly save your life.

Having just resigned after 22 years as a senior examiner and diploma instructor, yes it is worth it, but it is not joining an organization that is important but the quality of the training you get and more importantly putting that training into practice.

2 million miles on from having done my very first advanced course, it has certainly kept me alive without spoiling my enjoyment, and what you will find is that by application you will cover the ground quicker without actually going faster in terms of MPH.

Your anticipation, observation, forward planning, use of speed, gears, road position, bend assessment in fact everything will be enhanced and the grin factor will increase significantly!

What is it my old instructor once told me? "Advanced training is the best accesory money can buy" and he wasn't wrong in that respect.

I don't know where your mate gets the £15 to join RoSPA from, the initial test fee includes your first years membership, and if you attain lower than silver grade your re-test is free.

I don't know why I am telling you this though as I am no longer with them and really would like them to lose members just as they are losing examiners and diploma holders big time at the moment.

that's a bit of a strong statement

and yes you have to pay to join your local group before they will teach you but then the tuition is free apart from maybe the instructor will expect some petrol contributions

at least that's my experience

Care to explain why you would like this to happen?

Politics! Things have occured as a result of Kevin Birch who was head of the advanced drivers association resigning and his replacement Charles Davis taking over. At this stage I won't say anymore than that, but suffice to say that other examiners have issues which were not dealt with satisfactorily, now that I have resigned there is no one to train the diploma examiners (different to the normal test) and the Reading group will not be able to qualify their instructors on the cheap.

They also have a problem in that I have the copyright on the instructors manual which is also for Btec accreditaion (which is one of the issues) used on the diploma course, and only one of the remaining 3 instructors is qualified.

Some of the larger groups have distanced themselves from head office and I know of 5 diploma holders in the Berkshire area who have returned their qualification.

Even some of the major motorcycle organizations are having problems with a certain person and his politics, so before long, the chances are that the RoSPA advanced motorcycle test will go be the wayside.

As I say I cannot say more at the moment, but more will be revealed eventaully. Just don't ever get involved in politics of any description. Evil or Very Mad

Cheers for the info, I thought it might be politics.

Surely if things are that bad there must be a way to initiate a vote of no confidence? Well, I just hope that things get sorted out, I'd kinda been looking forward to getting to the stage of getting advanced accreditation.

It doesn't work that way I am afraid. Still nothing to stop you taking your advanced test though, if not with RoSPA then there are others out there.

I have been approached by two or three other organizations, but at the moment I am not committing to any of them as I have a number of irons in other fires as well.
