oh dear Sad

(Stolen from Gixerjunkies)

Just thought I'd post this email that I received from myshowplates.com this morning. Whether you use them or not to supply your plates I thought it might be of interest. First I'd heard about the law change to be honest

=================================
Limited time left to purchase your Showplates

You may have seen in the press that from 1st November 2008 it will become an offence to sell or manufacture registration plates that do not conform to the latest British Standards and design criteria laid down by the DVLA.

Consequently the ability to purchase Showplates displaying non-legal fonts/spacing/images/slogans etc will be outlawed.

As a result, My Showplates can only supply Showplates until 30th October 2008.

With this date looming and Christmas fast approaching we wanted to give you as much notice as possible to enable you to place your orders and avoid any disappointment. Here is a direct link to our website:

We appreciate and thank you for your past support.

Regards
The My Showplate Team

Probably a marketing campaign to get people to rush and buy plates before the autumn/winter slump

There is a big hole in the law, this does not apply to overseas companies , only to those who are registered in the UK...

So looks like I'll be setting up a numberplate company in Hong Kong next visit then £6 for the plate £6 for shipping hows that sound to you folks?.

Trying to find to find some details of this - how exactly do they define a 'number plate' (as opposed to a random sign the same size, etc)?
Only found car forums discussing the same thing.

Anyway, seems that it only applies to England and Wales; and lots of the companies are based in Northern Ireland and Scotland already anyway.
Was getting worried because you can't get flexible plates for trail riding in legal sizes.

What is happening I gather is that ALL numberplate manufacturers have to register and log with the DVLA the things they have sold and produced...

Thus they will go after the manufacturers with the £2500-£5000 fines.

It will be incredibly easy to test the UK based and or non registered ones ie the DVLA make an illegal plate on the online software, wait a couple of days they receive it and have an open and shut case.

As said all this will do is kill of many retailers in the UK and export jobs overseas.

EDIT looking a round a tad looks like companies are already circumventing the law , the first 5 online searches said they came from Ireland, Isle of man (which is free to ignore any laws it wants) or Scotland. , looks like England got shafted again.

It's not just affecting bikes, I know it affects the people doing plates for cars as well, different company, so if it is a marketing campaign it's a bloody well organised one!

But when does it become a numberplate?
At what point will it to stop being illegal to print some letters and numbers onto a yellow bit of metal for instance, because they are too close to a numberplate?

When the DVLA enforcer or police team who will be enforcing this are nearing the end of the month and do not have enough points...

It will probably be run like the illegal immigrants lorry drivers scheme where the lorry driver is deemed guilty first and has to prove his innocence paying a £5000 fine each time.

A helluva lot of people get caught by such things as they do not have the resources to fight the government or the police and cave since the £5000 is less than the potential court case that will ensue.

People have even accepted to be put on the sex offenders register because they can't afford to clear their names.

There is a big hole in the law and that hole is that a non-compliant No. plate isn't a No. plate.

A manufacturer can still elect to sell you all the parts for a No. plate as long as it isn't assembled.

Pointless law with pointless wording. Yet again.

Ah that old loop hole, which the UK government exploited heavily...

Ie we do not export weapons! ,

However it seems that the weapons have 100% parts failure and therefore we ship 1000s of tons of parts which incidentally happen to be weapons which also by complete coincidence are going to the same buyer at the same time.

the top line is: Live Young & Die Fast

bottom: But Make Sure You've Had Fun

i should have browsed around on ebay because the cheapest company had a shit design page so i couldn't see what text 14 was etc. some of the others did and were great.

G i had the same thought as you why not just have a sign made by a sign writer which looks like a show plate

the problem there would be that mr plod (if they even know about the law) would then be able to have you for failure to display any plate

Anyone know anyone who does black and silver plastic (i.e. not pressed ally) 'plates? I've seen them on bikes but not found a vendor, fancy one for the Suzuki.

Indeed Itchy; I have 3 points from not being able to justify/afford the money to defend myself.

Current law is that it's not a legal plate unless it falls into the specs anyway as far as I know - the issue here isn't with the police but whoever gets to do the sellers.
N30s example is an obvious one; they can't ban everyone selling yellow decals with letters on, I presume?
