Hi all,

Been offered a 1999 R6, all I know so far is:

18,000 miles
Remus Full System
12 Months MOT

He had an off on it on a trackday, where he claimed to have lowsided it and hasn't repaired the fairing damage. He wants rid of it today as he's in need of the cash.

£995

Anything I ought to be aware of? Apart from usual i.e. Consumables, rides straight and pulls well? As I know the bike sounds relatively cheap BUT I don't to buy it, realise something is fucked and have to spend £500+ on it. I've had a look on ebay and there's loads of r6 fairings on there going for pretty cheap.

I don't have any real experience with 4t's so I'm a bit of duck out of water here, at 18,000 what sort of things ought to be done to the engine? Valve clearances/cam adjustment??? If not is servicing the motor something you could do at home relatively easily (I have rebuilt many a 2t motor)???

Any particular faults with these bikes that I ought to be aware of? Aparrently have 1/2nd gear problems??

But the bike is only 15mins away from me so I can easily have a look

Shall I leave it or go for it?

Thanks,
Jack

I'm no genius with R6s, as I've never owned one, but I've heard plenty of stories of second gear going completely on the 99-02 models. I believe Luke VFR had this problem and the gearbox (or maybe just second gear?) out of an 03 r6 and put it in his

definitely wants test riding to see what it's like. thats about all I can offer I'm afraid

As Yankeedoodle says, test ride it and open the throttle hard in second gear. If it drops out of second then walk away.

Sounds a bit too good to be true to be honest.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

As I thought, the geezer seemed to be desparate to get rid of it. I just need to establish whether his desire to get rid is because the bike is a shitter or because he needs the cash (owes his dealer/baliffs? lol). Only way to do this is go on a test ride.

So at 18,000, in terms of the engine the main concern is the 1/2nd gear???

Even with a dodgy 2nd gear (not the end of the world, though annoying), it's an ok price I reckon, though not amazing these days.

My ZX9 third gear drops out to neutral or second on either a closed or neutral throttle, rather than while accelerating; basically have a play and see what it feels like.

Servicing will be a bit nastier than a 2stroke; but still doable if you've got a bit of knowledge and confidence.
Probably worth downloading a copy of the service manual to see what should have been done.

Right went and had a look at the bike earlier, to get it mint it will need:

R/h lower Fairing
Nose Cone
Tank (dented)
Wheels painted
Some engine covers
Screen
Rear Brake Pads
Chain/Sprockets
Front and rear tyres (both squared off)

Rode it and gave it full beans in 2nd and it handled it well, no slipping out of gear but the gears felt a bit clunky (not extremely) in comparison to the 2t's I've ridden. Is this normal for a 4t? My Dad's zx9r feels alot smoother. Also handling felt nasty, when cornering it felt as if it was on a pivot, hard to explain but it might be because of the squared tyres?? The owner is a self confessed straight line hero?? I couldn't see any visible damage to the chassis and in a straight line it rode straight and true even at high speeds.

It comes with a load of receipts, old MOT's (got 10months not 12) and has a Meta Alarm which is currently disconnected. Also the owner is unsure whether the Remus is a full system or just end can but did claim the previous owner had the bike set up on the dyno.

Price is now £900 after I offered him £800

What's reckon? Personally, I won't go for £900 maybe at £850 but I'm going to keep trying to push for £800. If he says no to £800 then meh, I aint really bothered.

Thoughts??

Ta,
Jack

If I'm honest you could probably get it for £900 and sell it on ebay next week for a profit, all depends. Or sounds like a good foundation for a track bike.

I'd probably buy it and ride it as is, slowly collecting parts until I've got enough to restore it (all at once).

It's a nice bike, just needs a bit of love.

That's to get it mint though. Cross the casings and fairings straight off the list.

The rest you'll get from breakers, there are millions of R6's around. Thumbs Up

Lets be honest, you're just a jealous twat Middle Finger

And who says I can't afford it? I may be stingy but it doesn't mean I haven't got money, quite the opposite in fact.

I just wanted to ensure it's a shrewd investment and was calling on the advice of more knowledgable people. What's the harm in that?

It will be HPI'd prior to purchase, to ensure it's 100% soundo.

I think I'll give it new consumables and ride it as is, slowly collecting parts until it gets overhauled.

Talking about I can't run it??? You need to have a good look at your own biking history. Gutted!!!

Will let you know how I get on with it as and when
