hi all,

i have a '92 j reg cbr 1000f, just lately i've been having trouble getting it started from warm, there are no running problems i.e cutting out, stalling, or running lumpy. it just refuses to start from hot after a run, starting from cold is fine on half choke.

i've balanced the carbs, changed air filter and got brand new plugs, but still no joy.

of course, this problem leads to the bike flooding and making the starting even more difficult. It will start with a bump start of off a jump start but as you can imagine this is far to inconvenient especially when i'm out on my own.

if anyone has any suggestions on possible causes or cures then i'm all ears.

ta very much

spark plugs fouling?
one of my old bikes had plugs which fouled when hot (expansion of the electrode).

Its not enough to effect normal riding, but can be enough to prevent warm starting..petrol puts the spark out etc.

Just a thought Smile

Those bikes are notorious for poor starting on old batteries - the starter drains all the power out of the battery and there's nothing left to run the ignition so you get no spark. The fact it starts off a boost points to that being the problem.

If the battery is a couple of years old, replace it.

thanks for the relies, but new plugs and battery are already fitted,

an aquaintance mentioned something about the coil(s) ? if they are on the way out then starting fom hot would be an issue.

any more replies greatfully received

could also be the starter motor. if worn they need a lot more power to run and has the same effect as a low/old battery.
i doubt it will be the coils as it starts with a jump/push ok.
when coils pack in they usually give up after a few miles from cold leaving you on the road side.

If it starts straight off a boost, I'd still be suspicious of the battery. Is it the right type? Is the charging system working properly?

The tell tale is if the starter sounds absolutely fine off the battery, but then spins just that little bit faster with a boost.

Mine has caught me out a couple of times.

Fuel down to under half a tank, parked up fo a few days on the side stand, can be a bastard to start hot or cold.
