I'd keep em in for a bit longer than a few weeks if this is your first big bike. Not from a safety point of view particularly, but it is easier to get used to the weight and handling of a bike without a quick twist of the throttle having the front wheel airborne. Just might take the edge off of being "nervous" about having a powerful bike. not that any hardmen on here would admit to it I know I was a bit nervous...but the excitement and grin factor drowned the nerves )
I kept mine in for 6 months, not planned, just took em out when I got round to it. (Err, sorry officer, they fell out when I got round to it)
But I reckon 2/3 months (if youre riding regular) would be enough to get used to it.

Yeah, no amount of restriction will stop you barrelling into a corner too fast. |

And, not to be cheeky grandad, how many sensible 17 year olds do you know?
I know that i wasnt particularly sensible when i was 17, and hell, i arent that sensible now, after nearly 3 years of riding...but I've learnt how to be when I need to. And you have to learn that. After all, the whole reason you get on a bike in the first place, is because you wanna "go fast". Live on the edge. Be daring.
Or you'd be in a car surrounded by bubble wrap.
Im giving advice to people who start at the age I started, and I think i'm right tbh.
Sometimes you cant rely on people being sensible. It just doesnt happen.
And for all the sensiblity Im suggesting, Im not out of my restriction period yet, yet picking up my speed four, I had power wheelied, almost kneedowned and topped 140. Not impressive by any means, but shows how having a new bike can blind one to the dangers. I was just enjoying myself.
All im trying to suggest is a middle step, instead of going the whole hog. Some people need it, others dont. But I reckon the majority need it.
God, we youngsters get ridiculed and berated for being "idiots" and "hooligans" yet when we display the right attitude, apparently we aint right, and need to be more adventurous. Go figure! ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

Hmmm,
I don't see the point in this 2 week period of restriction everyone wants to do...
It's a different bike whilst restricted.
Then when you take them out it's the same as if you wouldn't of bothered.
Ok you get used to the handling but seriously you can probably still low/high side it just as easy as when cornering you will be using less than 33bhp anyway |

Your 29, not 17-23 though, and you havent had a decent accident to shake yourself up yet. First thing i did when i got on my 400 when i was 17, pinned that throttle back, an yes i learned to smooth it out but then a bmw pulled out on me an my wrist has been alot more calm and tamed.

Thats YOUR thought process, and as a 29 year old (obvs this isnt the only reason, there ARE a small percentage of sensible 17 year olds out there....the ones that dont buy 600cc bikes ), a fairly sensible one.
Why do people find it impossible to remember what being 17 and wreckless felt like Wolf? lol ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

For me personally, put them in to start with, learn to go around corners first. When you've learnt that skill it may well get you out of trouble when you're riding it full power and fly into a turn too fast. ____________________ My Flickr |
