 |
|
I remember maybe 2 years back in west london on the A4 there were a bunch of lads on R1's and ZX10's lined up at some traffic lights having a little talk, a police vauxhall came towards them obveously dident like the look of the group, did a u-turn and put the blue lights on, they had a quick discussion, at which point 4 of them disappeared off never to be seen again by the panda car, one of them waited for the car to get close-ish, reached round to his numberplate, and just popped it off, it was held in place with velcro, placed it in his jacket, did a bit of goading then flew off down the road.
Now that story has no real purpose other than it was a funny memory, but does anyone know of somewhere that makes up and sells licence plates and a holder that join together with velcro? Preferably full sized ones.
And what of the legality of such a plate, Does the law specify a that a plate must be secured with two bolts or must it just be of the correct size font etc. It would obveously be perverting the course of justice or somesuch if you were riding about without a plate but how about riding around with a full sized plate that happened to be secured by velcro??
Been wondering about it for a while and would appreciate any info. |

Is it blatantly obvious that its on with velcro? what about chopping off the heads of some screws and sticking them on with superglue? |

My plate is held on with velcro because somehow i managed to lose the original bracket after i crashed - it's otherwise kosher with a number plate light and all - having no unsightly bolts on the plate also means that the police or speed camera is allowed to have an unobstructed view of my number plate without any misrepresenation caused by having some black or yellow bolts in the way of the letters lol - see i'm helping the law - obviously, it's handy if you need to make an overt getaway without wanting them to know your reg number (not that i've tried!) ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1

Don: you have raised a couple of points that I cannot argue with, but the more I read this fourum, the more I wonder at the mentality of some people. (Not you personaly)
Luke vfr writes how he nearly had a big crash after traveling at 152 mph at 3pm on the M25 and comming across standing traffic. Apparently the only way out was to filter at over 100mph. If he had hit a small stationary car with kittens in the back he would have killed the ocupants and everyone would have said poor luke.
He then goes on to boast about "Regular 170mph bursts. A few 150mph knee downs. A few 140mph wheelies. Nearly dying once or twice. Several police chases... The normal, really."
Bloke should be off the road. NSL is 70. Driving licence is a privalige, not a right.
I have read more than one thread that is something like "I got stopped doing 60 in a 30, how can I get away with it?". You don't. Accept it like a man.
These are the type of riders that would have flip plates and unfortunatly they are the ones that give us all a bad name, kill themselves and so the goverment makes the test harder. Nobody remembers a sensible biker, just the idiots.
Yes we all go a little quick sometimes, but there is a time and a place, so I am sorry to say that velcro and flip possibly only have a place for green laners where they might save the plate.
Cheers,
Stalk. |

My number plate on my R6 has been held on by velcro for around five and a half years and I have never had any trouble from doing so. It isn't illegal to have it mounted via velcro, as long as it is secure that is all the law states.
So why do I stick my plate on with velcro? It isn't for any unlawful activity but more out of convenience. For example I have a selection of four different styles of number plate (they all have the same reg number). I have the 100% road legal one for MOT time, I have a small single line plate that I used to use all of the time but it attracted too much attention, I have an 8x6 slightly fancy plate that I use 99% of the time and I also have an 8x6 almost road legal plate with big digits on it that are a bit squashed up.
To me the velcro option means I can chop and change plates in seconds depending on where I am going that day. I don't like having bolts sticking through number plates and to stick them on with double sided cushion tape would be a major inconvenience when I needed to change it.
As long as you can get enough velcro on the tail piece it will hold a full sized plate without a problem even at daft speeds. I tend to buy my velcro from Wilkinson's too. I even have a picture of it on my PhotoBucket album for you.

Quote Luke VFR: (from biker101 thread: Might have geen caught speeding)
Whenever I've set speed cameras off (and I purposely try and set them off when I'm riding without a plate), they flash instantly... Even before you reach the lines!
Thats your velcro plate stereotype.

I sometimes set GATSO's off on the wrong side of the road too, i guess im a twat too, and TBH being seen as a twat by someone like you (i will explain that) is something i wont loose any sleep over...
Luke is a young guy who is either very honest about his riding or elaborates a bit, what he does is ultimately his responsibility, as is everything any of us do. Berating someone on an internet forum for their riding (which im assuming you have never seen first hand) is something i see very little point in doing, Hes not gonna change what hes doing because you disapprove.
I think you dislike him because he represents the polar opporsite to yourself, who i glean is a family man with kids, a BMW and alot vested in "society" i notice it more and more lately, guys settle down, go into nesting mode and become utterly risk adverse, perhaps for obvious reasons, but either way if you dont want to speed, dont, if you dont want to filter at over the tonne, dont. But dont go round patronising people with the holier-than-thou attitude, and what is your obsession with people "giving us a bad name".
I see the plate thing as a big to the big brother world we live in.
Thanks to everyone who contributed positively to the thread, i have a decent understanding to my original questions.

Wouldnt it be easier to,
Get a peice of yellow sticker vinyl like well for stickermaking keep it under your seat the sticky back type, and slap that on the plate as its quick and easy being stickybacked? ____________________ Past: '05 Peugeot XPS '99 Aprillia RS125 '94 FZR600R

@Don, the problem with Luke going round that bend is if he had crashed in to the back of a car at that speed he quite easily could have seriously injured or more likely killed someone else, it's then taking his responsibility (or some might argue lack of) and placing others in potential danger.
On a side not, if Luke had been paying any attention he WOULD have seen the traffic around the corner and been able to scrub off more speed. I know this because I went round the corner at a meagre 120-ish earlier today and was able to take in a great deal of the road ahead before I even joined the slip road.
Look further ahead lukey.
