It was bound to happen. Covering the mileage I do these days, I was half expecting something to go a miss, but in hindsight, I don't think I could have done anything else to prevent such an event.
Friday morning, commuting to work. Riding down to a set of traffic lights, past a school. Two vehicles stationary in the central reservation (hatched area), both indicating right to enter school premises. Three parked vehicles on the left hand side of the road. I took the path down the middle of the lane - avoiding the vehicles in the middle of the road, in case they swerved left to make the turn, but also keeping visibility on the parked vehicles on the left.
The front passenger door of the Audi 4x4 at the back of the queue of indicating cars suddenly opens, just as I'm passing. I catch the corner of the door before the occupant attempts to exit the vehicle, swerve right and then left, strike one of the parked vehicles (already beaten up white van and no more noticeable damage upon later inspection), and then come to a stop. Quickly check my limbs are still intact, before propping the bike on its stand to inspect further damage.
Woman driving the 4x4 steps out, and shouts at her daughter for not looking first, then comes over, apologises, and we exchange details. I don't say much, still a little shaken, other than mentioning it could have been a lot worse.
Checking over my bike, both mirrors are bent, my arm's aching but isn't broken, I've skinned the end of my finger, and pulled a muscle in my back. Impact was around 30mph, but luckily, it seems, just a glancing blow. The Audi's in a bad way, the door's buckled heavily, crumpling the left hand front wing, and won't shut properly.
I contact my insurance company, who say they will not be welcoming a claim from the Audi driver, given the circumstances of the accident, and the fact that she admitted liability. There are no witnesses involved though, the rush hour traffic just continues as normal.
Am I to expect anything bad? The 4x4 driver was quite apologetic at the time. I've little to no experience of accidents involving other drivers, so would welcome any advice to cover my back if things turn for the worse. |

I would say, she's admitted liability so you've got nothing to worry about, but it aint always the case. Good thing is your insurance company saying they wont welcome a claim, should all go your way smoothly, and hopefully quickly. Hope you get it sorted mate |

CG luckily, I'm beginning to question what the point of owning the RR is.
My insurance company mentioned that they'll be sending through paperwork for reporting the accident, I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens for the time being.

Same thing happened to me Craig, a daughter of a taxi driver decided getting out of the car in the middle of the road was a good idea. I hit the inside of the door hard, and flew across to the other side of the road.
Don't budge, it's her fault, be brutal and to the point in all documents. If you need any advice, PM me. ____________________ Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.

Cheers Killa, expect a PM or two if things get grizzly.
The damage to the CG's already been repaired - I bent the mirrors back into position before setting off from the scene of the crime. Still got a sore finger though, and my back ache has no subsided.
As for psycho speeds - I think the CG managed to accelerate to 30mph before impact (collision is just after a mini roundabout), though obviously, from the point of view of the dozy general public, it might well have been faster than the speed of light. |

Glad to hear you're ok mate. Dealing with other people in these situations can become an utter pain.
If you haven't done it already, get down to the doctors for a thorough checkup. Explain to them what happened and see if you can't get a thorough report of injuries as it will help your claim process faster.
It's a real shame you don't have any witnesses. Although she has admitted liability at the scene I'm fairly sure her insurance company will advise her to claim it wasn't her at fault.
I remember in my case (woman turning right out of a side junction in front of me) she was sobbing and muttering to anyone who'd listen "I'm so so so sorry!" yet 2 weeks later, she claimed it wasn't her fault. All this dispite an off duty police biker as expert witness on my side, overall the entire claim took about a year longer than it should have due to her not admitting liability. It took a particularly long time as the accident destroyed a fair few ligaments in my leg and it took a while to get that sorted. But if you check out ok with your doc, and you're happy to take money for kit and bike you should be able to get it sorted fairly quickly.
Finger crossed for you. If you need any help with owt, give me a shout. ____________________ A quater of a NC30 and a whole tatty ZX6R J2, that's plenty...

Same here, had a woman hit the back/side of me when I had my moped and apologised at the scene saying it was her fault and that recently her son had lost a friend through a motorbike accident and that she should have been looking more etc, etc.
Come claim time, she disputed (or the insurance company did on her behalf) and said they'd only go 50/50 or to court. I refused and said I'd accept 70/30 at the very least or go to court, obviously indicating it was mostly her fault. They then went 100% in my favour, all in all took about a year and and a half though...
Good luck! ____________________ Previous: Aprilia Habana Retro 50cc (beauty), Yamaha SR125 (fell apart), Honda XR125 (nippy little commuter), Honda SLR650 (Geewhizz), Yamaha Diversion 900S (Smoooooth) written off courtesy of a stupid escaped horse.

Sound like they only defence they could possibly come up with if they decided to try it on is that you were speeding. But then to counter that, having her daughter open the car door and get out while waiting in the middle of a road in rushour is massively stupid, and if her daughter opened the door without her knowledge then she was unlikely to have acknowledged your presence or your speed either.
You're quite lucky really, I've always hated the thought of getting a door opened on me, corners are sharp, there's a window you might half end up going through, and it takes a good force to bend a door bakwards done with your body or the bike. I tend to ride on the white lines or opposite side when passing parked cars, but there's fuck all you could do in the situation you had. People are retards, I get them all the time flinging their door wide open when parked on the hard shoulder so that it actually comes out into lane 1 while i'm coming past at 56mph in my truck, they often jump out immediately aswell without looking |
