Yeah yeah I know. Embarassed

Must've happened last time I was out and I put th bike away without noticing, noticed the ugly black mark totally welded to my right-hand can when I got it out and checked it over ready for riding this weekend.

Checked my rolled-up waterproof pants and sure enough there is a matching hole in them. Sad (Bugger, they were my good ones too)

It was suggested to me that trying to scrape the goo off once the exhaust was nice and hot again might work but I soon abandoned this process because a) I still had to scrape it so hard it was scratching the chrome and b) the exhaust was too hot to touch and I kept singeing my fingers.

So come on all you cleaning freaks, how do I get this baked-on nylon/rubber stuff off whilst still maintaining my shiny chrome bits in pristine condition?

Here is a pic of the offending blob taken yesterday at the Cat & Fiddle...........

you could try a hard plastic scraper first, then wire wool and elbow grease, finish with autosol and more elbow grease.

How thick is it? , if its thick leave it to cool and it'll harden and you can chip it off with your fingers....

Its what happened in France last year when the CBR landed ontop of me and burned a big ugly black bit onto the zorst, it cracked off quite easily then got some bog roll and wiped it off.

Wire wool and autosol is the way to do it.

Autosol on chrome? Shocked Are you sure? Won't that leave a bloom of scratches? I only ever use it on ally or steel, been told it's a disaster on chrome. Confused

Itchy it's only thin, but it won't crack or peel when the exhausts are cold or hot (I've tried Sad )

Autosol is chrome and metal polish. I suggest white spirit. That's what me and my dad used on his RD exhaust when his boot melted to it Thumbs Up

2p coin in mole grips. Sharpen the coin with a file. Works perfectly. Smile

don't bother.

I had melted pannier covers and after a while they just flaked off and the exhaust was good as new.

Autosol is an abrasive so is not really designed for use on chrome as it will eventually strip the chrome off. Having just said that it can be used ocasionally to remove surface rust and other marks on the chrome finish.

The best cleaner for chrome is pink windolene, any chromer and they will tell you that.

I would try and carefully remove the bulk of the blob while its faily hot using the tip of a sharp knife. As long as you are careful and don't leave any deep scratches the small scuffs and litte bits of plastic left should polish out with autosol.

Good luck. Very Happy

Try Nitromors paint stripper, brush it on and leave for 15 minuites to soften the stain.

Could take a few applications to shift it. Bit of a rub with a brillo pad may help.

Let the exhaust heat up and it should scrape off easily?

yeah, what he said

i'd probably use c-m's method of just leaving it until it disappears by itself

but the risk with that is it goes from being melted on to burnt on
