 |
|
If you were to get say an Asus EEE PC 901 which one would you get Linux or XP? ,
Considering I do nothing on PCs other than look at things online do a few excel calculations and buy things and maybe edit the odd video and Mp3.
And down load the odd music track here and there...
Its just that I hear Xandros the packaged in software is not very good and Unbuntu is better but since I'm not exactly going to be in a position to install such things I'm a tad narfed until I get home).
Any thoughts?
Ta (yes I know there are quite a fewXP vs Linux threads out there but they go into obsene detail and my eyes tend to glaze over), the hardware matters very little since £10 will get me an upgrade to the bigger SSD. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. I would go for XP to be honest.
The reaosn being is that I just found a guide on how to install software on the linux ones and it looked like a pain in the arse!
Sire you can download packages to it, but your not doing any mad media stuff and your probably used to xp right?
If you want to muck with ubuntu and THEN put it on just plug in an external cd drive and use the UBUNTU live cd to test it before you use it?

Is there a cost difference? If not I'd say go for XP, if Linux is cheaper, then use Linux! |

smaller SSD, though you raise a good point in that XP will eat even more of the smaller drive... ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. You mean like three mouse clicks?
Sometimes a bit more in depth to enable installation of non-supported and questionably legal software but there are plenty of guides on how to do so.
People telling you how to do something on community support usually go right in with code, which is handy because you can just copy and paste it, code exectues, job done rather than saying click this, check that, drop this down. Most of the tasks can be done using the graphical interface.
The thing is, Linux doesn't come with all the non-free audio and video codecs as standard so you need to put them on. It isn't hard, there is even a step by step guide on how to do it on the support site.
Hell, you could have both. Get it with XP and put Ubuntu on it. The Ubuntu disc will sort out partitioning for you. Compare both, keep whichever you preferr. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

I bought her a acer aspire one 110 from pcworld the other day for 200 squiddies, reduced from 250.
I came with nix install, but after using for a bit i found that for her it wouldnt be as functional for her as if it was running xp.
Im ok using nix, but she isnt.
I installed xp from a usb pen drive for her, took about an hour
get the nix one and install windows on it urself if the nix install isnt what ur after.
PS the money u save can be spent on fuel |

Incorrect.
The COA relates to the machine it was originally attached to and can not be transferred. ____________________ If you dont like the way that I ride.......Stop trying to keep up!!! |

seeing as you appear to be a novice user no offense intended mate, but as you asked the question, I would say XP you know it you use it you can turn the new toy on and it will just work.

Get XP matey
I use Linux at home, and nice as it is, you want a gadget to be accessible and (please forgive me for saying this) "Just work"
You don't want to be constantly opening up terminals, etc, on such a small device. my 2c anyway. |

A 16gb SD card costs about £40 delivered these days; so the disc space shouldn't be a big issue if you run out.
If you've only ever used XP, it's probably best to stick with that; though of course that's why MS has the monopoly .
If I ever do some proper 'touring' style stuff, I'd be tempted by one of these, but am so far managing to resist the temptation to buy one. |
