I always ride with my Forcefield Pro L2 back proctor on (and found out how useful it was recently) but I need to buy a new jacket soon and wandered if it’s worth getting a Hein Gerick jacket with there HIPROTEC CE BACKSHOCK AIR back protector fitted so I don’t need to keep strapping on my Pro L2.
So the question is:
Which offers the more protection, jacket insert back protection or strap on back protection?

Problem I can see is that a jacket fitted back protector can move around with the jacket. A separate one strapped to you should stay with you.

I mention this as that's the logic behind a mate of mine removing his jacket protector and wearing a belt type beneath it instead.

FWIW I just keep the jacket fitted one as I want to spend as little time getting ready to ride as possible (lazy bugger that I am Very Happy)

After recently (well 3 months ago) coming off my bike and breaking my back, the best advice i can give you is spend as much as you can physically afford on the best back protection.

To be honest i would stick with the strap round your gut type protector, as previously mentioned, the jacket inserts can move around and if your jack rides up your back then it could be rendered useless.

Oh and it was just my luck, that weekend i was going to go to HG to have a ganders at back protectors anyway Evil or Very Mad

Stand alone protectors also tend to cover more of the spine, down towards the coccyx area too, which isn't really practical in a jacket.

I use the Knox Contour with a chest protector too. Thumbs Up

My local Knox dealer wouldn't sell me a jacket insert protector when they found out I already rode with a Ricochet (superceded by the Aegis), said it was a waste of my money as I already had a better piece of kit and I should ride with that.

I recomend the Forcefield Pro L2 since it's Level 2 protection. And it works as i found out in June. Just thought a jacket one may be easier.

My jacket has back protection built in and protected me just fine in the crash I had last week.

The Contour's level 2 as well, there are quite a few level 2 protectors now. The Dainese one I used to have was only level 1 though.

I use one of those forcefield jobbies and wore it through Spain and back , they are ok , not tested mine yet though...(ie not come down on the road) the straps around your gut make you feel fatter than you really are though....

That said I'm so fantastically lazy I have 3 biking jackets and I left the Knox insert in as well.

debates on back protectors always seem to differ, some say extra ones are a must (me included) and some say not, i think any form is better than nothing, but at the end of the day it's how you fall, where you fall and prob most important what you hit! as to how many star ratings some items have. personaly i don't like the safety side of just a jacket, full leathers are best protection in my veiw,,but that is just my veiw.

i prefer back protectors that are not attached to me, mainly for the reason that if i have a crash i want the ambulance crew to see any deformation and discoloration and be able to feel my spine, and the same as when i want it clearing in A and E. Where as one strapped to me would need removing before any comprehensive examination could take place, possibly causing unneeded movement.

Most strap on back protectors can be cut off with cutting the 3 straps in A&E if needs be.

True, but a standalone protector may prevent more damage occuring in the first place. Depends on the crash you're planning to have I suppose. Smile

They didn't have to cut my back protector off when I got to A&E as the straps simply unclip from the waist belt and the chest protector is held in place with velcro. There were lots of oohs and aahs, and they all commented on the amount of gear they had to strip off me. Embarassed
