Riding when its icy?

Ok my only transport right now is motorbike, i passed my cbt a month ago and i've also had my cbr 125 for a month riding exclusively to work on it, I've handled the rain quite easy i just dont push as hard as i would in the dry, now the ice that could be a different thing altogether.

Is this recommended or not?

Yes i recommend you ride on ice.

Why don't you just assume that eventually it will catch you out and you are going to come off....and if you don't, then it's a bonus!

Not so bad on a small light bike but as said try and keep to gritted main roads.

I used to quite like riding in snow when I had the 185 - I could put my feet down flat on it and do "handbrake turns"

I came off on the Pan on sheet ice at about 1mph. Fortunately the Pan has great crash protection so no damage but was a bugger to pick up again.

I've ridden through the past couple of winters, sometimes through ice and snow storms! It's not too difficult if you just take it slow, try not to lean too much into corners and generally don't do anything sudden if you can help it! Also leave a BIG gap between you and the vehicle in front...

Now stop talking about ice, you're making me feel cold and we're only just into Autumn!

this will be my 3rd winter on a bike... never come off due to ice yet.

i just consider everything shiny or wet looking to be slippery as fuck.

also, try and corner with the bike bolt upright, and leaning off to into the turn, as it will lessen the risk of it just going straight into a lowside.

Came off twice in snow.
Within 24 hours of each other

As already said, try stick to main roads as much as you can.
If you have to take a back road just take it slow, dont make any sudden turns and stay upright as you can.

Agree with the stay upright comments, give yourself lots of time, sticking to main roads can be useful.

Also, what time do you set off and come home??

If you setoff at say 8am or later a fair few cars are normally out and about and tend to warm the car tire tracks a little, this can help if you can stick to these in corners rather than going over untouched road which might could be slippier - if you get standing traffic though, the underside of the cars also warms the road a little. On ice it can be that penantic and it isn't fool proof. Try and keep the bike upright and be prepared for it to maybe slip/move about a little. Try riding on some gravel if you have some near you (very slowly) to get a bit of a feel for how your bike moves around under you - not the same as a slip on ice but will maybe give you a little more feeling that could help.

Personally I've done it before but on my new commute I just wouldn't dare it - last commute was Hastings > Brighton, new one is Hastings > London which is nasty enough in heavy wind and rain.

I tried to be a big man on my last ped and still have nightmares of going around the top of my road sidewards

Held it though as I got my feet down but on a bike I think you'd be off.

I have never gone so slow on the way to school.

Shook me up proper, more than most other scary things I've had happen on the road, including an off.

Just take it easy if you have no other alternative. I'd rather of walked that day looking back on it.

But yes I recommend you ride in ice.

Riding on snow/ice with an automatic scoot is scary - small wheels and no clutch control.
