See if I buy a new SATA HD, swap it with my old dead one and fire it up, will I just need the Recovery Disks to get my computer up and runninig?

Is it as easy as this or a bit more difficult?

Please help....

Yes you will need some sort of install media for the Pc.

Is it branded unit, I mean like a dell hp packard bell etc?

Or was it made for you?

It's a Compaq, nasty job from PC World....

I made the Recovery Discs when I first got the PC, so if I fire in a new HD, I just have to hit F11 or something when I first turn it back on and fire the discs in?

Your recovery discs are CD's, right?

If it's just a few floppies, that won't work.

You may need to chance the boot set up in order to boot from CD, open the BIOS Usually del during the POST I think one of mine was once F2 though it should say as soon as you turn it on press XX to enter setup there should be an option called boot then there will be an option in that to chance the order of media the PC tries to boot from you will be it set on CD.

As above but you may be lucky a lot of off the shelf Pc's are already set to boot from disk, probably to save on the calls to the helpdesk on how to do it! Thumbs Up

Compaqs are not THAT bad they are from HP. Wink

Advent
E Machines
Ei Systems

Or whatever sh*t PC World sell these days. I've had the same compaq desktop for 5 years now. In that time I've only had to replace the DVD RW due to failure. The RAM and video card have been upgraded out of choice. Never had any problems with it Smile

Get Acronis and make a complete HDD clone to a file.
Takes a while for large drives and the finished filesize will be big but defo worth it!
I have a backup of my drive just how i want it and its on my spare hdd.
If my pc goes pop or the hdd fails i can simply swap it and i have 90% of my stuff Smile all my programs, windows etc.. just how it was when i backed up!
Very good software! i think its also part of hirens boot cd

Or just press the one time boot option the machine will offer as mentioned like F11....

Then when up and running you dont need to worry about it looking at cd's on boot ever time... let alone find a cd it can boot from and trying..

Microsoft now give you the software to do this. Its in the Vista WAIK (yes, Vista, but it will happily work with XP) which you can download for free. Plenty of guides on how to do things with it (look up WinPE and Imagex for a better idea of the tools to use).

Its called VSS Windows home server uses it and you can get about 19tb onto 300gb's or so I have read.

It looks for cluster changes and not file changes.

Pretty good I use it for backing up al our pics at home.
