I put the blue tape over a slogan/ advertising on the bottom, then decided it would look a bit better as a full border, but, is this illegal ?

Yes, but that plate looks illegal anyway.

And use the yellow nylon bolts at the top, technically the black ones are illegal there (though I doubt you'd get done for that, or the letters being slightly wrong)

Shape of the letters, this is what it should look like:

https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w215/impreza_2007/Picture2-2.png

Though I'm not sure if it is different for older bikes. My 125 has a tin plate, and the letter shape on the 500 is slightly wrong.

Is there a Kitemark and British standard number next to the "Riverview" writing?

Thanks, I think there is yes.
Them lower "bolts" don't actually bolt in to anything, so I was thinking of swapping the top black ones for the yellow ones and not having any lower ones which might make it look a bit better.
So just to clarify,is it that the border is illegal in that colour or illegal no matter what ?

I presume with it being an ex training centre bike, they were for an L plate? Might want to fill the holes with filler once you take the bolts out, then touch em up yellow, I had a cop give me a bollocking for having holes in my number plate Neutral .

It's illegal in any colour, as it is reducing the size of the yellow background.

The yellow has to be reflective (I think) so in plain yellow, it is illegal Razz.

[edit]

DVLA website says your fine with the letter shape, as the bike is pre 2001.

Quote:
The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following
information: -
● The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
● The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component
supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
● The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean a
company whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
● A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters are
optional additions.
● There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.

Note the bottom one, I think that makes insulation tape borders illegal Razz

The visible area of the plate with the tape is 6 x 8in
so its 155 mm by 200 mm
Text taken from this pdf, l A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters are optional additions.
so, if 6 x 8 is a legal size then the border is ok ?
(whats the legal size?)

It also says that an unreflective border IS allowed, so what constitutes a border?

The border is a small line, no more than 6 mm across, e.g. the black line on this one:

To be honest I can't you being done for anything if it's a bit out, but that first pic is taking the mick a bit, because of the font, may as well have luke's plate and be done for the same offense.

My plate isn't standard, but it went through MOT fine and all the times I'v been stopped it's been looked at yet never anything mentioned. If you want a pic for comparison I'll post one later.. Thumbs Up

The font is legal for the age of the bike.
