Hey all,

I've got a server that is running out of space on it's Boot (OS) drive.

It was foolishly partitioned with 12Gb for the os, with 55Gb left unallocated (thanks Dell!).

Now, it's a SCSI drive running with RAID1 so I cannot foresee a problem as any change will simply me mirrored.

But does anyone here know if there may be an issue? I'd rather not have an additional drive with some programs on it, if I can help it.

Cheers!

PS - I tried the Symantec site, but it doesn't really say.

At long as PM can see the drive I don't see why there would be an issue.

If its a NTFS or FAT32 partition why not just use Diskpart?

Oh and 12Gb is a pretty standard size for an OS partition, we use it as a default on all our servers and haven't had one run out of space. If you keep the apps and data away from the OS partition, 12Gb should be plenty.

I suspect it's so when stupid customers asked for more disk space, they can go in there with Partition Tragic, or similar, to 'grow' the partition but charge the customer for a larger HDD.

It's the same thing Compaq, etc, did for years with CPUs - they ship all servers with dual/quad CPUs but only have one enabled. The dumb customer asks for another CPU, so the engineer goes onsite to enable one of the CPUs and gets charged for a new CPU.

Quick visit, reduced parts handling, happy customer, nice profit.

We've used HP/Compaq servers for years and have never seen that.

I did once try to save money, when upgrading a server, by buying a standard Intel CPU to add to the existing one. Didn't work. The HP partt came with a small regulator board that was required. Server wouldn't recognise the 2nd CPU without it. £300 price difference!

I take the simple approach.

All servers are configured as a single logical drive on a RAID 5 array with a hot-swap spare disk.

Backup of all servers are done with Powerquest's (Now Symantec) v2i Protector over a 1Gb LAN to removal hard drives on a dedicated PC. This allows for a bare metal recovery.

Not as performance efficient as different drives for data, logs etc. but very robust.

I didn't think Partition Magic worked on server OS's - you need to use their other product, Powerquest Volume Manager, instead. No doubt they charge you much more for it.

I'd use a free alternative.

I seem to remember PM not liking Dynamic disks.

And to the OP who's the foolish one who has obviously installed all the app's and data onto the C: drive.

I always keep the C drive for the OS only and create another volume for data and apps.

Run an OS only and save all data to the 2nd partition.

Saying that with a couple of service packs XP suffers with a 20GB partition. No wonder people call it bloat ware.

To be fair, any company who can come up with an error message:

https://www.buizel.net/anything/error/wtf.jpg

defies even the stoutest beating with a clue-by-four. What chance do the (l)users stand?

Yup - atleast lh hasn't done what someone i know did and deleted the C:\WINDOWS\Installer because it was 1.6 gb in size Smile... Then wondered why the users started emailing in as none of the shortcuts had their icon's anymore...

Just move the swap file onto the other partition - that should give you a couple of gig.
