Been given 40 liters of old petrol in two steel jerry cans the guy who gave me them thinks the fuel is around 10-15 years old, poured a small amount out today and it looks normal but theres no smell or fumes but it still ignites, could l mix this 50-50 with fresh fuel and run in in my old CB250 without burning a whole in a piston? Twisted Evil

Run it through a couple of coffee filters and use it for your mower...

I guessed as much Laughing

I had petrol in my old VFR tank that sat around for 8 months, looked a bit manky so I just chucked it, for the sake of £10 max of petrol that was in there I'd rather not have my engine running shit or causing damage (unlikely, but it's not worth it)

Use it to clean things, petrol's still a solvent at the end of the day. Not sure I'd want to chance it in a motor though, I know fuels expensive at the moment, but it isn't that bad. Look on the bright side, you got 2 free jerry cans!

Take it back to ASDA for a refund and say you forgot you actually had a diesel bike and had bought the wrong fuel. Then spend the £40 on booze and porn.

But don't put it in your bike.

Petrol is only rated to last about a year, unless it's military grade stuff with additives. And even then it has to have been stored properly. If the jerry cans are 15 years old as well, the seal will be shagged. The petrol will be oxidised to fvck and full of gunk. You cant smell anything because all the volatile hydrocarbons have reacted with the oxygen in the air and turned to shit. Even if you filtered it you would have difficulty getting it started, and if you did your fuel system would hate you for it. So would the kittens because it would smoke like a bastard!

Hi

Had some fuel of about that age in a petrol tank of a bike I got (bike last used in 1995).

I did use it, but only by putting a couple of litres in each tank in the car. Car is non cat so wouldn't care whether it was leaded or not.

All the best

Keith

I've left a bike for three months or longer before. You can buy stuff called 'Fuel Stabiliser' that prevents the fuel from going 'bad'.

However what is more of an issue is your carbs (if you have them) they hold a small amount of petrol in the float chambers and if this evapourates it will leave a gummy residue that will prevent your bike from running properly. The best thing to do is to turn the fuel tap off. run the bike until it cuts out, and put some fuel stabiliser in the tank. It also may be worth storing the bike off of the floor so the tyres don't get flat spots, and stuffing a rag in the exhaust so condensation can't get in.

A search on Google for 'motorcycle winter storage' yields a lot of good results. Here are a couple of the better ones:

hi,

Do you have stained teeth? Mix the petrol with bleech, and use a cotton bud to scrub your teeth. Old petrol is a potent teeth whitener!

This ones always got me as well, i've read about fuel stabiliers and the like but i've never had a problem. I've never done anything special, apart from keeping the tank filled so it didn't rust.

I've left the bike 5 or 6 months from around November till April. Every winter in fact. Also consider the battery though and I put both wheels off the ground.

Before any fair weather posts, I've ridden my other bike daily throughout winter.

Classic bike did some test using unleaded, leaded substitute, and old fuel. Whatever the bike was it actually generated more power with the old fuel. They, and the dyno guy, were honest enough to mention that they had no idea why this was but they tried it a few times and ended up with the same result.

The bike I sold last week hadn't moved for 8 years. Started up with a new battery and some ether sprayed in the airbox. Bloke rode it home on petrol that cost about 75p a litre.

If it's been sealed in proper jerry-cans I'd say it would be as fresh as the day it went in. Shame you couldn't identify it as 4-star I bet there are plenty of purists (a.k.a. anoraks) out there would pay for 'proper' fuel for their restoration projects.

EDIT: actually 10-15 years might not be old enough for that.

*feel old now*

Can also buy it in this country still, quite a few garages still sell it.

Keep it for filling up hire/courtesy cars.

The hire Focus went back with a good 20l of manky old shite and leftover premix thrown in with the fresh stuff.
