Just saw one of these sites selling things real cheap.

Gotta be a catch or scam? What exactly is the scam being used with these auction sites? Stuff like a new Nokia N96 going for about £20. Laughing

Quote:
Charge-up your account with bids
Each bid costs just US$1, available in "BidPacks" of 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500. Pick the size of BidPack you want and decide how you want to pay: either with a credit or debit card, or via PayPal.

So, you have to pay to bid and then pay for the item at the end.
I guess it becomes addictive trying to get a cheap bargain.

Looks like eBay on smack.

I'd imagine there are fewer bargains to be had on desirable items as people will continue to bid, especially if they've invested a number of bids beforehand, and the bigger bargains are to be had on the less desirable stuff.

A dollar a bid? Do you have to pay that whether you win the item or not? If the former is the case you'll find a bunch of staff bidding-up the item relentlessly.

Pile o' sh!te.

As above, scam, basically.

Because you pay to bid, they get a massive amount of money from people bidding, way more than the cost of the item.
If you can get it with one bid, then you're in, but if you bid £21 for that N95, there's bound to be someone else who wants to just use their one bid to get it for £22.

That sort of site is basically a scam, because you pay each time you bid they get a lot more money that the sell the item for. You are very unlikely to win it and the in some cases it's been suggested that the site 'cheats' and adds another bid anyway, so no one really wins it.

I have edited your post to help avoid any confusion should anyone else click the link. It might help with the site's google rankings too Smile.
