woke up with a massive hangover and still far too pissed to go out on bike so..

stripped a customers xbox 360 down that had the Red Ring Of Death (he actually gave me this xbox 360 in exchange for a few cups of coffee at work), tried the penny trick first to try gain a little more air flow. didn't work.

so stripped it down to find this mess Sad

christ, what a mess MS made of them, too much thermal compound and the quality is a joke.

10 mins later with some white spirits and got the GPU chip and CPU chip back to a mirror shine.

It will still eat your games if it gets the slightest knock.

I lost one of my games to that, moved the box slightly to the left and heard a weird noise. Took it out and it was 'rimmed' right round the outside of the disc. Double pissed off!!

I doubt the 360 was designed in any way to be portable or moved around whilst turned on. I'd be pissed off at myself, not microsoft, if I did that and damaged a disc.

They are shockingly badly designed, the ATI gpu get so hot that sometimes the clamps go soft and the chip literally desolders itself from the board taking some careful heatguning to get it going again.

It's wonderfully ironic after the flak the ps3 drew when the exhibition prototypes overheated in those little plastic display cases Laughing

I rotated the machine about 3 degrees to straighten it up, I didnt pick up and throw it about for fucks sake. It was a very early xbox that died the red death and ended its days in a cardboard coffin.

his kit was spot on and included thermal paste, he also sells the T8 and T10 torx drivers and the opening tool I think.
