Hi

This morning I have just performed a service on my 2004/54 plate cg125 (oil change, oil filter clean, air filter clean, spark plug clean, etc) - its the 12500 miles service. When I tried to re-start the bike after completing the service the motor turned over once but failed to start (this is normal). However when I tried a 2nd time the motor didnt turn over at all - all I get is an electrical switch-like sound from the area of the battery (this bike only has an electric starter).

But I didnt touch any of the electrics - apart from the spark plug!

I was very careful removing the plug - I cleaned around the base first and then removed the plug. The plug itself looks in good condition (in my opinion - and that of an old haynes manual I have). I have removed an replaced it several times to be sure. The battery definitely has power as the front light comes on when I turn the key to the start position.

Any ideas? To me it sounds like the starter motor is just not kicking in. But surely this is not a coincidence - is it? What could I have done here?

Cheers

I think the battery could be just low but not entirely flat. When this happens the lights can come on but there may not be enough power to turn the motor.

The switch clicking you can hear is the starter relay, this is normal. Firstly I would try charging the battery, if it is not holding charge it is probably knackered. It is curious because the service you did should not effect this.

Was the bike stood for a while before you serviced it or is it used daily?

thats right - I was nowhere near any electricals.

I use it on a daily basis for commuting - except yesterday. So its been standing for 1 day only. I havent had any electrical probs before.

Ive just got back fromi the local honda dealer and he reckons I should try to manually turn the crank (to move the piston), dig out any grime from the spark plug holder, and give the starter motor a bit of a hit in case its "jammed".

Well I couldnt get the crank case side offf using the nearest fitting hex allen key I had - and I didnt get any junk out of the spark plug holder. My next trick is to give the starter motor a bit of a hit (with a mallet).

u tried bump starting it?

get a mate / victim, or someone young enough to find it fun, to push u while in second gear and ignition on
drop the clutch and twist on the power

once started keep it still with a few revs on go for a small ride to charge the battery and then back home, switch off, and see if it will start again

if the battery is really dead, dont go far incase ir cuts out, Smile

Put a new spark plug in.
Charge the battery.

Then see what happens before you start beating the bike up.

Check out the Honda CG125 website
https://hondacg125.awardspace.com/

To turn the engine over simply put the bike in 2nd gear and turn the back wheel with the ignition off.

apart from sounding like a flat/knackered battery you may have disturbed a wire somewhere.

check all the connector blocks for a good contact and also check the battery leads and earth wires are tight enough.

I got it fixed. At the end of the day all it took was a hit on the starter motor with a mallet - Im not a mechanic but it seems it must have seized up when I initially attempted to start the machine after the service.

Thanks for all the advice all.

I particularly like this tip - quite useful. I wonder why the honda mechanic didnt mention that!

I would still replace the spark plug with a new one, they only cost £3 to £5.

I wonder if the battery had recovered enough to start the bike.

Take the bike for a long ride so the bike can charge the battery up 100%.

Its a real pity honda removed the kick-start for cosmetic reasons.

Im not a mechanic - but Im pretty sure the battery was unaffected by my service. The headlight was not dimmer and the horn still had the same "power". In fact the time difference between the starter failing and working was only a matter of the couple of minutes that it took me to give the starter a hit with the mallet.

It is classic signs of a knackered battery though. I've had it on my cars before. Lights + Stereo turn on but doesn't have enough juice to crank the engine (that's alot of power on a car) and power the spark.

Something to bear in mind should you be in that situation again. Smile

Again, in a car, hitting the starter motor frees up the solonoid which moves the end of the starter into the flywheel. Sometimes it gets stuck out and just spins up without engaging.

Although i'm not sure how it works on a bike.

Have a look on howstuffworks.com for starter motor if you're interested. They'll probably have a bit on it there.

I used to start a bike that only had a kickstart (not a honda).

It developed an intermittent fault.
When I tried to start the bike there was no resistance on the kickstart.
I mechanic told me to hit it with something big and heavy and it worked.
Every time I hit it hard enough I could hear a spring go ping and then the kickstart worked.

The kickstart only engages with the engine when the engine is off.
When the engines running it must disengage with the engine.
I belive the fault was the kickstart was still disengaged when the engine was off due to the spring not springing back.

I used to hit it with a big heavy disc lock.

I wonder if draining all the oil out could have caused the fault with the electric starter?
Saying that I still expect battery voltage / charge.

Hi, read this first post and skimmed the answers, it is definitely the battery. I have just part ex'd my '54 plate cg125 and had to put a new battery on it a couple of months back, so your bike is due for a new one same as mine was, and the symptoms you describe are identical, the clicking sound is the starter solenoid trying to kick the starter motor in and failing due to lack of juice in the battery.

Battery was about £28 from a local parts centre.

Was this battery an original Yausa or another brand? Im only concerned that another brand might not have the same dimensions and therefore not fit into the space in the bike.

Yuasa - £34

Varta £28

Just changed the oil a week or back with Castrol oil. Only Oil that Halfords stocked for the CG125.
Maybe this week i will clean the chain and lube it aswell.

I agree - if you take care of it, it will take care of you. I eventually found that my problem was down to the starter motor bushes wearing - not the battery at all. I must have been unlucky during the service and knocked the motor and dislodged some dust onto the solenoids. When I opened the motor there was a reasonable amount of dust on them. All I had to do was dust off the brushses and put it back on the bike. Worked a treat. How many other bikes (never mind cars) can you do that with? I even found a video on youtube.com to show me how to do it (google "honda cg125 starter").

When I was riding the other day I spoke to an owner of a Honda CG125 2004 model.
He also had the starter motor problem and simply cleaned it.
The problem happened after 15000 miles.

I just found a video of someone bump starting the Honda CG125.
It looks like a 2004 to 2008 model.
Sounds like the battery needs a charge.

Yes, and it was because of this video that i had done my first oil change... Smile Smile Smile

I only wish there were more videos related to the Cg125 out there on youtube.
Perhaps a FULL service video will do the trick for me.
If i was to get a second bike, it would be another CG125. Smile

I reckon that one day i will need to replace both my tyres. I believe the costs a whopping £80 onwards for one. Is that true?
Does anyone know of a place to get tyres of this bike at a good price?

I put on 2 new Sava tyres a couple of months ago for £83 inc fitting. Just check your local honda or bike dealership/shop.
