Was a post about the exact same thing a while ago, search for it, I can't be bothered doing it for you.

It seems an unrealistic and unecomonimical way of doing it to me, you'd need insurance (on a UK licence with no US address), have to buy a car in a short time frame and sell it in just as short a time. The costs would far outweigh hiring a vehicle, someone like Topgear can do it because they have a large piggy bank and are the BBC, your average joe, it's a bit trickier and more expensive.

Why the hell would you choose an XT225 Confused for a country known for it's long straight roads, can't imagine anything worse, they've only got about 12bhp, a DR350 would be bad enough.

she was doing south america aswell as north america

she wanted something she could pickup easily if dropped

her bloke is austin vince who went round the world on dr350s in mondo enduro

I think one approach for a big tour, would be to have a biggish road bike for countries where the roads are good, and a smallish offroad bike for when the roads are bad.

some people would think that touring in in the slightly cramped riding position of a sportsbike, would be more crazy than riding on a more upright dirtbike.

The upright bike may be more comfy even if its slower.

I've read her book and her constant self-congratulation gets really quite wearing.

I'd do it on a buell if i was going to tour america. Got a reasonable amount of power so you won't get bored to easily but more comfortable than said sports bikes, don't know how much luggage you could fit on one though Laughing

I say you do it on a firestorm, just for the daftness of the fuel range Very Happy

I'm only 6' tall and I can't sit on one for more than 20 mins lol.

And they vibrate, badly. I read in one of the bike mags about a bloke who had 2 fillings shaken out whilst on a test ride Laughing

In the latest Bike magazine there is a bloke doing the Parallel trip on a R1

https://www.fasterandfaster.net/2008/04/parallel-world-mr-sanders-is-at-it.html (probably NSFW)

Mad he is, still the read in the magazine was good.

There is always the Buell Ulysses, comes with large panniers if you want, and it is a big bike and very, very comfy.

I rode one of those and i'm not particularly short at 6ft, I was on tip toes and found it quite difficult to move the bike about while sitting on it, it also vibrated horrible, wobbled loads, sounded awful and honestly thought if I hit a big bump the engine would fall out.

I am 5'9" and had no trouble on it at all, I must have longer legs than you. I found it great fun and was sad to have to hand it back after a 2 hour ride all around the Stockport area.
