Is it possible to link 2 wifi routers? edit: new idea

I've moved into my uni house to discover the wifi doesn't reach my room, I can get poor signal occasionally but thats it.

One thing I've wondered about is putting a second router half way to my room to try boost the signal, is it possible to do that?

Otherwise its looking like giant ethernet cable for me :/. Cheers.

Yes it is possible, but unless your routers are both designed to do it i think it unlikely that you'll be able to.

use a directional attenna with plenty of forward gain, it's possible but tricky to build your own there are plenty of examples on the interweb pringles tube, bake bean cans but the hard part is getting the multiple elements the correct distance apart and alsothe correct size.

unless you can connect the second router to the first by cable and then set the second one to access point only, so that the first one still does the DHCP then i don't think your gonna do it with 2 routers, how are you going to get the second router to wirelessy connect to the first? it is something that they just don't do..

I have a netgear dgn2000 and the free o2 wireless hub I got with the internet.

Looking at the sort of replies, I'm guessing it's a difficult idea. However I've been looking at network power plugs, has anyone used them before? Seems to be a simple solution to my problem the only thing I worry about is what kind of speed would I get from them? And could I use them off of a multi plug or do they have to be plugged straight into the walls?

you can use them there supposed to be alright, only thing is you ave to make sure that both ends are using the same supply 'phase' should not be a problem in small dwelling has they have only a single phase supply anyway but if it's a huge building the supply might be full 3 phase, and from one side to the other you might be on a different phase.

you say 'uni house' is it a normal houe split into flats/bedsit type things in which case you'll probably be alright, or is i a huge block of bedsit type jobies in which case you might not.

It's a 3 story house, that has a bed in every room it can fit one in, its just a normal house that has 6 people living in it.

I'm on the top floor and the router is on the ground floor.

It can but it would be hard to get power to it as there are no plugs in the hallway, although I could run an extension cable from a room I suppose, would just need to find a place where a door could be closed over the cable.

hmm i would have thought you should get a signal only a few fllors up have you tried altering the orinentation of the router on boht planes I.E to get the antenna horizantal (unless of course the antenna is external) in which case just rotate it till its flat this should radiate the signal more up and down as opposed to out and around when the atenna is vertical.

if its just a house then the plug in ethernet jobbies should work just fine.

I seem to remember away off boosting your wireless range by connecting you wireless aeiral to the ground of a plug socket.

Well thanks for all the help, in the end I went for powerline plugs so I get the internet through the walls, its freaky but cool and I only lose half a meg off the internet speed so results.

Only thing I'm trying to work out is if I can use my netgear router to wirelessly broadcast the internet from one of its switch ports at the back. I got it sort of working but some websites won't run and its a bit temperamental.

That could be the way of doing it I will give it a shot .

Only thing that annoys me is I can't access the router from my PC I can only edit it from my laptop its bizarre .
