He was doing 56mph in a 40mph temporary limit at Llanfairfechan on February 4. But PC Treleaven-Jones was cleared after telling a court yesterday the 40mph speed limit sign was lying face down and another was partly obscured by another sign

sounds reasonable to be honest..temp speed limit-impaired signs.

No you wouldn't get away with it using that excuse as a civilian.

It would be like saying "The sun was in my eyes and i didn't catch the unmarked speed camera van behind the hedge"

wouldt get away with it no because the word of a police officer is trusted more..going on the guess work that it was normally a 60mph road and had a temporary limit of 40 and the signs were in some way unclear..seems like a mistake we could all make..not an abuse of power etc.

Actually I think most people would get away with that if they did the same, took pictures of the signs at the time. It's not the same as saying you didn't see the camera van, the camera van is not a speed warning, you shouldn't have been speeding to start with. People get out of speeding fines on these kind of technicalities all the time, for once I don't think the copper got any special treatment.

“I immediately thought there was something wrong. I returned to Aber where the speed limit started and found signs in that condition.”

PC Treleaven-Jones used a mobile phone to take photographs.

He said the weather that weekend had been “particularly bad” and was windy.

Translated.....

Ie I got flashed , so I went back and pushed the sign over and took photos of it , and thus perverted the course of justice fabricated evidence.

What this means to you is if you get caught by a GATSO , go back vandalise the signs take some pictures and you'll get off.

Having read the article I think what they're saying is that he got off because a temporary speed limit was incorrectly signposted. i.e. it was not a legal imposed limit.

Therefore a member of the public should have got off in the same limit with the same conditions.

FWIW a few years back some police motorcyclist were off duty riding their own bikes and got done for speeding in another force's area. Rather than holding their hands up they went back and measured the signs, distance between them etc. and found they weren't correct so got off.

tbh he goes through there every day for work and even if they roadworks had been setup that day he should know that they always have a 40 limit for the roadworks. Also, they have repeater signs along that stretch too.

personally i don't see why the limit should be enforced at 2am in the morning though but since it is, he should be treated like anyone else.

True, but frequently when roadworks are coming to an end, or the layout is being changed the speed limit is removed before they taken down. So if one night the signs were missing you could well assume the limit was lifted. They do it all the time, usually put a cover over the GATSOs to stop them going off.

As said he could have gone back and pushed the sign over, he's taking a big risk though as there could well be CCTV anywhere and if caught he'd be in a hell of a lot more trouble than 3points on his licence and would instead risk losing his job.
