Torrents?

Talking to my mates at the weekend (and being short of cash!)

They all download torrents for games, so I thought I would give it a go...

Do they always take so long to download?!

What can I do to speed it up, other than from get a faster connection?

Torrents are hit and miss as you are relying on other peoples upload speeds as well as your download. Add to that the size of the files and it is a whole world of pain.

I am not going to mention when you finally get it and find out it is corrupted. Evil or Very Mad

Some people recommend using azureus as the torrent client and searching the net on how to tweak the settings. I tried it once but found it no faster than say, Bitcomet.

If you can afford it, switch to newsgroups. Like garlic bread - it is the future. Thumbs Up

Seed : someone sharing bits of the file you need.
Leecher: someone downloading the file you are.

A 1/1 seed leacher raion will give good speeds, better is very rare on public trackers. Hunt around for a torrent with plenty of seeds, and as good a ratio as you can.

Typically torrents will only download about 8 times faster than you are uploading, so set a sensible upload cap. Get a few going and leave them on during the day at work or overnight and 15hours for that game suddenly aint so bad Thumbs Up

Public torrents = shit speeds
Private torrents = really fast

nothing to do with tweaking IMO as most clients say for example utorrent does all the work for you.

You can get good stuff just by leaving you computer on over night every night.

It may take a few weeks for the things you want to eventually finish downloading, but as you have a few things that you are downloading, its not as bad as it sounds.

Worth it for the complete set of the sopranos, and any movie that you can think of that you can find a torrent for.

Yeah I know how you feel.

I found a torrent with all the stargate series on it and is gonna take upto nearly 1 year Shocked

because of all the damn leechers.

I do my best to at least seed until at least a ratio of 1:1 more if there are few seeders on there.

Lots of torrent sites out there just check a few of em to find a nice healthy torrent.

Oh and was pointed to this last night.

Not torrents though, it uses sites like rapid share etc to store the files.
Well worth a look I'd say.

Just out of curiosity does your uploads over there count towards your download limits ?

Some plans over here do but not on the one I'm on so seeding is no issue for me.
Have a 50gig per month DL limit and hit that most months Very Happy
