PostPosted: 10:10 - 01 Oct 2008    Post subject: Inspirational/Impressive quotes, what gets your heart going? Reply with quote

I love reading inspirational and impressive quotes, and I'm always on the look out for ones that really make you think. I mean really, really good ones. Often, the simplicity of the message can convey so much more than would be believed in a tiny sentence. I dont have a particular favourite yet, but I've heard/read some rather good ones.

I'd like to know what peoples favourite, inspirational, intellectual quotes are...what are the quotes that reach your heart? Render your thoughts into a total and utter "That could NOT be more right." state of mind?

Im looking for stupidly clever ones. Thumbs Up

One of my favourites, not inspirational as such,

"I am prepared to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter." - Winston Churchill

I have one of my own that I thought of a while back. I dont know where it came from, but I like it. It's sort of my own motto really.

"The beating of my heart and the breathing of my lungs is enough monotony for this lifetime." - Me

Im saving some good ones to add to the thread as it grows hopefully. Also, has anyone come up with their own quotes, their own mottos towards life etc?

Thumbs Up Karma

I had a bet on with myself that the first reply would be a good one. Thankfully I won.

"The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done." - George Carlin

Mmm...

Not exactly a favourite, but it sticks in my mind:

"The road less travelled maybe less travelled for a reason." (Jerry Seinfeld)

I was shooting the breeze with a friend recently and out came some musings on alcohol. I was telling him I was in the local Coop and a kid I know (through the world's largest youth organistion in which I occassionally lend a hand) was standing behind me in the queue with his mum. I was buying a bottle of vodka (Glen's as ever) and his mum said "Oh, have they driven you to drink?" I said "yeah, I don't drink any other night of the week" to which the woman behind the counter snorted! Laughing (Cheeky fucking cow Laughing )

Anyway, we decided that alcohol was life's pollyfilla because at the end of the day if the house you were born into was already riddled with cracks, all you can do is fill them in as you go; things will look better but the cracks will still be there under the surface.

Oooh! Cheery... Crying or Very sad

I was out with a group of friends one night some time ago, one of our party was on the pull and not doing very well. He asked me where he was going wrong, I said; "Your ego is writing cheques your charisma can't cash."

Not exactly inspirational but what can you do. I think as a stand by, in terms of tenets for life in general my favourite quote would be: "Always expect the worst, that way you'll always be pleasantly surprised." Not sure who said it first.

Thumbs Up

A few of my faves;

"One may bask at the warm fire of faith or choose to live in the bleak certainty of reason - but one cannot have both."

-Robert A Heinlein

"For a list of all the ways technology has failed to improve the quality of life, please press three."

-Alice Kahn

"Anything invented before your fifteenth birthday is the order of nature. That's how it should be. Anything invented between your 15th and 35th birthday is new and exciting, and you might get a career there. Anything invented after that day, however, is against nature and should be prohibited."

I hate people who live their lives in that manner, they're always stupidly negative people who bring nothing but depression to situations.

Fuck that, be positive, about everything.

Stinger: Maverick, you just did an incredibly brave thing. What you should have done was land your plane! You don't own that plane, the tax payers do! Son, your ego is writing cheques your body can't cash. You've been busted, you lost your qualifications as section leader three times, put in hack twice by me, with a history of high speed passes over five air control towers, and one admiral's daughter!

Seriously, watch it. Great film. Was also voted gayest film evar cos of all the male shower scenes Laughing

Funny you should say that because overly cheerful dare i say: bubbly people get right on my tits. Its like they're trying way to hard to cover up some inner misery. I say if you're miserable? wear it on your sleeve, don't be afraid to share it with the smug cheerful set because lets face it, they need to FEEL YOUR PAIN!!! Crying or Very sad

Ahem... Anyway... Conversely I tend not to bring depression to any situation due to the very fact that I'll be expecting it to be impossibly shit. When I arrive to find it isn't, I'm pleasantly surprised ergo, cheered which I can pass along to others in the company.

What I will never be (and friends have been told to shoot me if I ever do) is bubbly. I just don't trust bubbly people, its normally a cover for some sort of deep set issue that'll raise its ugly head when you least expect it. If not that, then its just a word that means 'fat.'

Thumbs Up

PS @Fawbish, I paraphrased, not quite as bad as out and out plagiarism. Wink I'll need to check out those shower scenes... Ummm I mean aerial dog fights, ummm action scenes, I mean you know... Planes and stuff... Crying or Very sad Wink

Oh yeah, overly bubbly people can be annoying but no half as annoying as people who constantly assume they're going to fail at everything etc, that gets you nowhere fast.

I'd prefer to spend my time with someone who looks for the fun in things, aims high with optimism about their goals than someone says stuff like "I'll try but probably fail".

I certainly don't think I'll fail if I try anything new, I suppose the difference is in dealing with things out with your control. In that, I always expect the worst. If it's up to me, then its a trade-off between optimism and realism.

For example, bike test. It was up to me, I was confident I'd pass and I did. On the other hand, I had to phone the bank for a temporary overdraft, fully expecting to be told to fuck off, I was pleasantly surprised to be told 'yes sir, how much do you need and for how long?'

Anyway, on topic...

I was going to supply a witty quote about failure/success but they all seemed either cheesy or just plain glib. Confused Never fear, before embarking upon my internet search, I was expecting the worst so wasn't overly disappointed...

Shaun, theres a difference between pessimism and realism Wink

"The power of accurate observation is often mistaken as cynicism by those who do not possess it' - George bernard Shaw

My favourite quote is by Boethios and is used in 24 hour party people;

'It's my belief that history is a wheel. "Inconsistency is my very essence" -says the wheel- "Rise up on my spokes if you like, but don't complain when you are cast back down into the depths. Good times pass away, but then so do the bad. Mutability is our tragedy, but it is also our hope. The worst of times, like the best, are always passing away".'

Others,

"Those who risk nothing, do nothing, achieve nothing, become nothing"

"A zest for living must include a willingness to die." - R.A. Heinlein

'The reason organized religion merits outright hostility is that, unlike belief in Russell's teapot, religion is powerful, influential, tax-exempt and systematically passed on to children too young to defend themselves. Children are not compelled to spend their formative years memorizing loony books about teapots. Government-subsidized schools don't exclude children whose parents prefer the wrong shape of teapot. Teapot-believers don't stone teapot-unbelievers, teapot-apostates, teapot-heretics and teapot-blasphemers to death. Mothers don't warn their sons off marrying teapot-shiksas whose parents believe in three teapots rather than one. People who put the milk in first don't kneecap those who put the tea in first.' - Richard Dawkins (Russells teapot is pretty much the same thing as the flying spaghetti monster)

and always good to finish on a giggle...;

'take pacman for example,if computer games influenced kids, then we would all be running around a dark room trying to eat magic pills while being chased by monsters and listening to repetitive electronic music'
- Fuck knows, but its funny as
