graphics problem

Just got myself a new comp, specs are:

Samsung Syncmaster 226BW - 22" monitor

Ibit 35 pro motherboard

HIS ATI HD 3870 512MB GDDR4 PCI-e Video Card

2GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS2 RAM

Intel Core2Duo E7200 2.53GHz, 1066MHz CPU

So loads of processing power.

Anyhoo when I play quake on the normal 800x600 resolution I get loads of annoying little green dots everywhere.

If I up the resolution they go smaller so not so obvious but then everthing is to small.

Anyone any ideas on this?

See first thing I thought is that your graphic card sounds a little duff cause usually artefacts signal graphic card problems.

I also think it may be software related, what OS are you using and why are you playing it at 800x600 on a 22" screen with a system capable of playing it in full?

Using vista business32, I play at 800x600 so I can actually see the other people. At a higher res everything is to small.

Sounds like a fault on your graphics card. Years ago I had a similar problem - first you'd get dots and eventually they'd grow till all textures were black and white checkerboard. Apparently it was a fault with the onboard memory.

Try taking it out and put it in another computer and see if it does the same problem (if you're that way inclined). You could also try updating the drivers to the latest one. If you're already on the latest try getting some older ones and see if the problem goes away.

It could also be overheating.

Overheating could be one, seeing as its an ATI card they do get ultra hot.

Now resolved. Was connected with a DVI cable. Used a vga from monitor and a adapter at graphic card end.
Bingo, no more green dots.
