Avast/adaware... what has gotten past them

Help! I keep getting an error message saying "unauthorised modification to windows software, you will no longer receive updates and messages from MS." or words very similar to that effect. There's a link that takes me to a problem solving page that tells me I have unlicenced software, and to use the add/remove software facility to remove it... At this point I found out that I now cannot open my control panel... at all!

I have adaware and avast and have done full thorough scans and they haven't found anything untoward... what on earth is the problem?!?!?

That's not a message from Microsoft.

Personally I'd:

1) Reinstall Windows
2) Install Windows Defender
3) Use firefox in future.

Or if you want the easy way . . .

Install Malwarebyte and Superantispyware update them both and do a scan.

A reinstall is the "if nothing else works" option.

Adaware just hasn't managed to keep up for a few years now. Malwarebyte's anti malware is brilliant however.

Download and install that, I'm yet to find anything that it won't get rid of.

Try a system restore, if you have it turned on, to the last time software was installed.

Er actually, that sounds less like malware and more like your machine just isn't activated. Did you happen to reinstall your machine ~30 days ago?

For clarification:

Is this windows XP or Vista?

Are you using a genuine legimate key?

Have you activated it?

Can you get a picture of the error message and post it here? Plenty of tech minded people here should be able to spot the difference between a proper MS error message and a fake one from a malware vendor.

Ok, system has been scanned using Malwarebytes... It doesn't have any bugs. I've restarted the software licence stuff using a command prompt as windows verification kept failing. I have tried a system restoration back to the 18th sept, long before this happened and still get the same message. I've typed the error code into google and found all kinds of wierd and wonderful cures, tried them... only thing left is fully re-installing windows I think... unless anyone else can help. I haven't made any serious changes to the system since I bought it a few months back. It's windows Vista home basic and Here's a picture of the error prompt...

edit: forgot to mention, after restarting the software licence, windows verified fine... and after the error message appears, I cannot access my control panel.
