For example if my test was in march next year, would it be a good idea to buy a big bike in january or anytime before the test.I bought my Nsr before my cbt just to know that it was there to ride the day i pass and if i know that a 4k bike is waiting there Smile i know if i dont pass first time i would keep going until i pass.

Cheers Thumbs Up Mr. Green

If you were to fail you first have to wait a week before you can rebook then you could possibly have to wait a couple more months for the next test.

So Id say leave it untill you have passed. The temptation to go on just a LITTLE run to see how it handles would be hard to overcome and Knowing sods law youd get pulled and banned before youve even passed making your shiney new bike a paper weight in your garage for up to 2 years Shocked

Or worse you fuck up bin the bike into a wall and end up with a 4 grand Twisted metal paperweight and a few broken bones. Then the cops turn up at the scene of the accident and you get banned and fined as well then have to recover the bike from the cops impound. Evil or Very Mad

Meanwhile use the time to get out on the 125 and practice.

Well, I bought mine before I passed my test, but only 'cos I bought it from a friend. And I didn't pick it up until I had- he needed the money, and I couldn't get it trailered the 180- odd miles home so that's how it worked.

If you're just buying a bike and there's nothing you particuarly want I'd wait 'till you've passed though.

I bought mine before my test, and I succomned to the temptation. Just walking past it had me quaking at the knees longing to fire it up and whizz around the block. One slip, one little mistake, even another driver fooking up and it would all have ended in tears.

I'd use my time now perusing all the dealers to sit on and get the feel of as many bikes as possible so when I passed, I knew exactly what I wanted. Then get on the web and get the best deal I could on it, knowing I could ride it away.

You know it makes sense....... Confused

I don't see the harm in it. Maybe get a cheap one for a project to get to know the bike befor you get on it if you can afford it. You have pleanty of time to sort one out too.

If you have the cash to buy a bike and possibly retake the test should the worst happen and the will power not to ride it then buy it in dec/jan the prices should be pretty low then. A bit of sun in march/April and you'll be paying a bit more.

It's a big incentive, but may also put you under undue pressure to pass. But if you find the bike you like and don't want to miss it then I guess it's a good thing. I bought my first big bike straight after the test, I rode down to the dealers and part-ex'd my 125 there and then, picked it up the following day. Thumbs Up

Depends if you can afford it tbh.

Assuming you have the cash to buy it in advace, why not get it in the dead of winter when everything's cheaper?

I'm buying mine of my dad in like 2 weeks and my test is in march.

Your money, but you know if it is just sat there it will then cash will be evaporating, you also need to be sure that you will be able to resist 'just taking it out for a spin' if it is sat there.

Al things being equal then it's your money - your call

however whatever you choose to do there will always be a bike availble for you once you do pass your test.

it depends what you are buying to do.

last october i sold my little RS50 to buy a ZZr600 that was local because it was a very cheap and superb condition bike. unfortunatley, i didnt sell the RS untill the ZZR was also sold and so i had no bike. then i kept looking for another bike and found the ZZR i now own, the plan had been to pass my test in november and so the one month would have been ok. but i didnt pass until mid january so i had the ZZR in the garage until then. having past my test and insuring the bike on the same day - i then found i had a flat battery - so my advice is charge your battery before hand just in case!
in hindsight, i wish i had not bought the bike i did and waited for a better deal or a better condition bike. but i bought it through buyers eyes and i had no bike so just wanted one in the garage.
i spent that extra time i had the bike though, cleaning it and making it all look nice and shiny ready for the day i could take it out.

my advice would be to start looking for a bike once you have the money. then buy one which is a good deal or as a small project, fixing and changing bits in the time you have before you get your license. you'll be a little gutted looking at your bike if you fail your test, but when you pass and sort your insurance out from the minute you hang up and drink your cup of tea before heading off out to the petrol station - that feels great!

so, buy the bike if its a deal not to be passed or a project and ONLY if you can resist the temptation to take it out for a ride when no one's around.

Silly to spend £4k on a first big bike, maybe Smile... £1500 will get you an ok R6 which isn't far of a CBR-RR in most things.

Apart from that, a sensible idea, an ok idea especially if you were to get a bike that needed a bit of work... if you do it on the basis that you are looking out for the very best value, as you've got a few months to wait.
This way you can probably find a decent deal over winter. However if you decide to do it and go for the first one you find in a week's time it's a bit of a waste, probably.

I've bought an er5 and my test is next month - got a friend to drive it home for me. The only problem I had was insurance - loads of companies said no-one would insure me cos all I had was the cbt... Bennetts agreed to insure me no problem tho Thumbs Up

Don't do it unless you come across an unmissable bargain. If you just go out and buy a random bike, you will spot a better deal a few weeks down the line and your guaranteed to be annoyed by it. I made exactly the same mistake when I did my DAS.

DONT DO IT.

I have a mate who was 4 weeks away from being able to ride his NEW triumph 675. He was changing the oil in his old zzr250 and decided to duck down to the shops to buy some stuff to get the job done.

No probs he thought will just take the trumpy for a 5 minute run.

It's now on his shed floor after being written off.

Why tempt yourself. Unless you know you can trust yourself Very Happy

Although there is an argument for buying it now, if you're anything like me then you'll have spent all your savings on subways and petrol by then Laughing
