Has anyone used it? I've had it for a while and never looked at it but I'm doing a fresh start on a new hard drive. If anyone has any experience with this would you recommend it etc?

Thanks

James

I don't think it's meant to be used on a normal PC, the way it works is by running on specific hardware and then making that work like a Tivo/home entertainment hub sort of thing. I wouldn't bother to be honest.

yeah, wouldn't put it on a PC if i were you Smile mainly used for just listening to music, playing DVDs etc, probably will be used in embedded systems in the future too... XP Pro at the moment is the way to go, if your PC is less than 3 or 4 years old

Thanks, I'm on XP Pro at the moment so I'll just stick with this!

From the sounds of it I'll need to upgrade again and again to use all it's capabilities!

If your not going to use it for watching/recording Tv etc. on your erm.. TV then don't bother.
It's basically windows XP with lot's of extra bells and whistles for media etc.
There's no gain if your only using it for a desktop PC, in fact it would prob drain more resources that you wouldn't use.

I am about to work on project to build my own to use at home for watching/recording cable TV and various other media files Wink

My Dads been working on this sort of stuff in his spare time for a while now. We use MythTV for the front end and he set up the back end himself. It works nicely becuase the comp in the lounge records TV and what not and then serves it straight to my comp in my bed room Smile

I've been meaning to look at MythTV for a while, but haven't got around to it.

Would be interested to hear how XP media centre compares to stuff like Myth TV... at the mo I'm just running XP Pro on my 'media' PCs.

It'll use the TV card in your computer, I would have thought. I doubt you could stream it over the internet because of licensing issues.

I was mucking around with MythTV for a while, it's such a pain to set up I gave up with it though!

you use a video input for the TV input (i.e aerial/sky/cable) and then video out to display it on your TV.

some graphics cards have both (VIVO) but you can get dedicated cards for tv capture and then use a video out enabled graphics card for displaying it.

there is also the issue of controlling your tv input (sky/cable etc..)

I am looking at getting a little infrared transmitter that stick on the front of my telewest box so you can controll the channels from the PC, otherwise it's a little pointless.

The greenbutton website has loads of info.

Sounds like I may invest, mainly because it'd be easy to set up and my TV is like a yard away from my computer. Pointless really but I used to do it with my all in wonder radeon. I wonder if they still do them Confused

/me goes to look

Its just another way Microsoft can make more money, through all the geeks in the world that MUST have a computer in every room.

Its designed for things like this https://www.digitalmediastation.co.uk/

I know someone who has ordered one, couldn't say what its like yet tho.
