Its that time of the year again, time to upgrade a few bits and bobs on the PC and I'm thinking of reasons to look at getting Vista.

Much as I'm not that keen on Vista I would like to have the option of using DX10 for games. M-Audio also now make Vista drivers for my sound card so thats another reason to consider it.

I'm trying to justify the outlay of cash so I need more reasons than the above two. Microsoft have 100 BS reasons, however I want some of the Vista lovers on here to give me some propper reasons to shell out my hard earned cash.

Cheers

Dave

Other than DX10? Can't think of one. Unfortunately the project for getting DX10 on XP has been abandoned :-

https://www.techmixer.com/download-directx-10-for-windows-xp/

There's a couple of bits I like, but it's nothing that you can't get with free third party software anyway on XP.

Unless you really want DX10 there aren't really many reasons. Well it's networking system is brilliant much better than XP's runs a lot smoother I've found. Also first time I booted my vista PC it did all the running round to install all the drivers I needed from windows update I didn't have to do anything.. Whereas with the XP I have on the same PC I had to spend a while looking for drivers before it all worked right.

To be honest I wouldn't have bought vista if I wasn't buying a new PC, I like vista a lot more than XP it feels odd going back to XP because it isn't as good you really notice it after using vista for a while.

Don't do it. Vista is a steaming pile of buggy half-finished dreck and you will have nothing but grief with it unless all you intend to do is surf the net.

I speak as someone who has had to deal with it on countless clients' computers and as an owner of the Ultimate edition myself. I went back to XP, been a happy camper again ever since.

what he said ^ i hate it but just can't be arsed to re install xp.
i avoided it deliberatly for a long time because i know it'd suck straight away but it still does over a year after it's release.

What Hetzer said. I bought a few new computers for my business. I wanted to "future-proof" myself so I went for Vista systems in case any applications came out that would require it.

Big mistake. Working on networks is a nightmare with Vista. Actually, any config work is a nightmare. It also uses a LOT of memory in comparison to XP.

I often have to go home from work to fetch my XP laptop if there is a network issue.

If I could I would have XP now.

No, no reason to buy Vista.
If it's on a PC you buy make sure you get an installation disk so that you can reinstall if required.

The security on Vista is tied down so it's very difficult to do anything even as a user that would be expected to be able to do stuff.

Also from what I gather Vista is mainly all about protection of intellectual rights for media. So that means you're getting a lot of baggage that you don't really need in day to day use.

It also takes up a lot of memory. You'll need about 4Gb to run it fully (that is if it's not a cut down 'Home' version). In fact the number of different flavours of Vista is a nightmare all to itself.

The life of XP has been extended due to the Netbook type PCs. That's the 7/8/10" screen size that can also be solid state as they don't have the memory/processor to run Vista (see the likes of the Asus eee PC).

That said, Vista SP1 seems to have fixed a lot of issues and apparently it even runs quicker Shocked. So I'll probably hold out for SP2 and then get a PC that's got the processor and memory to run it Wink

HTH Thumbs Up

I have 4gb of RAM and a 4ghz C2D so I'm not that worried about the system requirements, all my hardware has vista drivers so that shouldn't be a problem.

Should I get Vista then I will have to get the retail version as the OEM version is tied to the MB of the computer its first installed on, which is crap for anyone who frequently upgrades their computer as it means they have to spend more money.

At the moment sticking with XP64 is looking like the best option as no one has come up with any real reasons to bother upgrading.

I did see the DX10 on XP stuff last year but it was never really going to work easily for the average home user as it would never be supported by microsoft.

Look at it this way, you will need to upgrade at some point if you want to keep up with new developments then yes go vista.

I have had very little in the way of issues with vista, apart from my media remote not having drivers vista installed everything for me, I just went and found up to date drivers for my gear.

Gaming is fine, media is fine, networking is totally fine.

I am doing the R&D for the company I work for and so far we are all positive about the OS.

I think some people have had bad experiences with it, but if you have a good system as you seem to I would go for it.

remember if you get a copy of vista before you buy it you can use any version for 30 days before it makes you activate.

So why not try it out for yourself?

Oh and DX10 for XP never going to happen.

Thumbs Up

I run 4gb RAM Pentium Dual Core PCs, and sometimes on Idle 2GB of RAM is being used!

Vista also has an annoying habit of closing applications for no reason.

I think if there's nothing specific within Vista that you require, you should go for XP, I know I would.

I switched to Vista some time ago. Wouldn't go back to XP out of choice, the interface feels a lot better to use than XP.

As for reliabilty and performace, I run it on a D410 (4ish year old laptop) and an M65 (nearly 3yr old laptop).

The 410 boots Vista in less than half the time it did with XP (and thats compairing virgin builds of both OSs). The M65 crashs less frequently with Vista (running the same apps, its a 'business' machine).

So, for me, Vista wins. However, if I had an XP machine already and had to spend my own money to upgrade, I probably wouldn't bother.

Depends how you look at it.

If you have a decent machine like divuk Vista is absolutely superb. The superfetch system in my opinion makes running a computer so much more stress free. Basically it'll hog up a lot of RAM but your frequently used programs pop up in a flash.

Boot times. Do you notice with XP that after you use your machine for a considerable amount of time that it starts to take ages to start up? It doesn't with Vista, my PC which I have now had a year still boots up in less than 45 seconds. I don't need to format my PC twice a bloody year because my machine becomes slow and unresponsive.

Viruses. Vista is the most secure Windows OS out there. Not even any die hard XP fan could deny that. How many virus threads on here contain the words "Vista"? I haven't seen any, i've never heard of my mates or colleague ever having a virus. Yet last month my fiancées brother had to completely reformat his machine because it gained a nasty virus. The upside of this? You don't need buggy AV software, I simply use Anti-Vir and Windows firewall and have had no problems whatsoever.

The look. I'm sorry, I defy anybody to say that XP looks better than Vista. It looks like a 2001 lego toy, no amount of third party software will change that.

DX10 is IMO the least appealing option, I have never found a great deal of difference.

The only regret I have is that I didn't get 64-bit version of Vista as I would like to upgrade to 4GB of RAM and have my PC actually see 4GB.

Please tell me. What is the fucking point in having 4GB of RAM if your machine will only use less than 1GB? The superfetch system means that Windows actually uses your RAM rather than reserving it for when it needs it.

I'd rather have Windows using RAM than the dreaded page file, that's for sure.

Like Jon I've had a very good experience with Vista BUT I only got it because it came free with a new PC.

I like the fact that a year after installing it still runs quickly like Jon says. Reinstalling XP every 2 months is a PITA really.

Would I pay for it? Probably not. Do I prefer it over XP? Definitely.

I bought the PCs with 2GB RAM, and it was always very slow. I have between 10-20 IE tabs open at work, and if I opened Dreamweaver (BIG program), it was crashing. So I put another 2 GB in my computer and it's still not brilliant, but it's a lot better.

And as for Vista, meh, we slap it on our top end new rigs at work and it runs ok, but then we are very careful only to use components with fairly mature 64bit drivers.

I had a similar issue to Hetzer, brought an OEM vista ultimate, stuck it on my gaming rig at home and had numerous games go nutso as a result. I went back to XP and stuck the vista license on my laptop.

What on earth are you browsing/running? My install of XP dates back to June 2005 and if I remember right, that reinstall was purely down to me starting from fresh with a new from the ground up PC.

Bet you would need an obscene amount of RAM on XP for what you are running, so it's a bit of a non-argument.

My laptop handles it fine with XP. Intel Centrino (Not dual core) and I did up the RAM to 2GB.

Perhaps there's a problem with the PC I use at work ? But honestly, in my experience Vista is very slow, even on a fairly decent computer.

I put vista on and old laptop of mine it was a 3.4 p4 with HT and 2.75gb of ram it was fine. I think Vista is brilliant and have far less problems with it than I did with XP.

I honestly don't get how people have problems with vista Confused, I know a lot people in the real world who use it and none of them have problems. This is mostly down to the fact none of us use antiquated hardware with Vista, but then we're students so we often seem to find a bit of spare cash to invest in things like PC's.

Whoever it was that said you need 4 gig of ram you are totally wrong, I've been running my PC on 2 gig and have yet to max the ram out and I do a lot of multi tasking and gaming on here, the only time I limped a bit was when I was uncompressing and compressing a large number of win rar files whilst burning an iso and copy a large amount of data between hard drives and web surfing and playing music. I gotta be honest it got a bit laggy when I did that but I was asking a lot Very Happy. I'm still yet to see my rubber ducky system monitor turn red (means I'm out of ram).

I think you will find vista prior to SP1 is one of the biggest jokes out there, though not as much as the like of Windows ME etc.....

I'm have been using XP64 for over 3 years now and its one of Microsofts best operating systems. Its basically a 64 bit, desktop optimisted version 2003 server (another very good OS). Never had any problems with drivers and the only software I couldn't get going was real player which is crap anyway. I can take advantage of having more the 3.2gb of RAM which is not posible without a 64bit OS and XP64 is very stable being based on a server OS.

I'm a bit amazed the 64 bit versions of windows are not shipped as standard with all computers these days. All AMD and Intels (apart from celerons) are x64 chips so why supply them with an OS for x86 architecture?

Back on topic, resons to get Vista
*DX10 support
*SuperFetch
*Not as crap as it used to be since SP1
*At some point it will have to be done

I'm still not sure that I'm going to bother at the mo.

The point is, applications that are written for a x86 bit operating system are ONLY written to fit inside the memory map I/O of 2gbs.

Considering windows XP has a hard time dealing with more than 3 correctly it makes a massive difference to loading times and Alt/Tab'ing in and out of apps.

Crysis and Bf2 levels load in half the time for me and my harddrive is not going insane for a couple of minutes after something is loaded as the drive swaps back the live files that are being used.

I use vista 64 I wont go back to XP BUT on the same breath I can see why people dont upgrade if they have to pay for it.

Vista is a fantastic product depending on your system as I know of some people still having issues with finding drivers. On the same note Vista 64 IS the most stable OS as it will not allow any driver to be installed that has not got a digital signature from MS.

That is unless you disable this feature.

It uses indexing much better than XP does and you dont need to install any extra software for it to run.

I have 4gb's of ram and the most I have seen it full is 74% running Crysis warhead and that was with IE open and I Alt Tabbed out to check that. If I had tried that with XP I would need to wait for tha cache to catch up, whereas now I can go between apps in seconds.

Some people will never be convinced its just the way it is, I waited for a couple of years before I upgraded. Exactly as I did with XP.

most people will move at some point.

I guess Microsoft shot themselves in the foot, by eventually after a lot of patching and SP1 which most people had to install to even make it usable, they made a good OS (XP) and now people are not willing to move to vista because of once hyped and now pretty much redundant/solved problems.
