I bought a pair of Alpinestars ST-2 (I think that's it?) the other week.
Nice and cosy and most importantly seriously WATERPROOF.
However, that was until I had to go to Tesco at 9pm last night.
After 10 minutes, my hands were numb.
Think the only way to win is to become an old man and get wind deflectors and heated grips. ____________________ Suzuki GSX-R750K4 ~ Mivv GP |

Somewhere just a bit further down the forum is a thread about bar muffs. Read it, then I don't have to post up yet another pic of my bike with its own winter gloves on.......... ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

Clicky
These are pretty much faultless in terms of windchill, a mate of mine has them and i tried them out and couldn't believe the difference.
Hands stay much warmer, you do lose a lot of feel for the controls but when your hands are numb from the cold you can't feel them anyway. Also they aren't as tough as some other gloves but they would hold up to a pretty fast 'off' i'd imagine.

Incidentally when I'm riding the bike that isn't equipped with built-in warmth during the winter I wear a pair of thermal liners under my regular winter gloves (which are the 2-finger style ones).
I got the liners off a snowboarding site, think they cost me about £5 including the postage. Well worth it imo. ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

I grabbed a pair of Alpinestars Jet Roads the day the sale went on.
Compared to my tech roads they are much much bulkier to the extent that at first I was struggling a bit with clutch control, but a couple of good riding sessions dealt with that. The padding around the thumb is quite bulky making indication a bit tricky at times though.
However, they are vastly warmer than my tech roads which themselves are reasonably warm already, even adding a liner glove to the tech roads doesn't compare to these jets. I can't see myself needing a liner with these on anything but the coldest of mornings tbh.
The cuff is a good idea and works well, but is fiddly to get on, you've got a padded inner liner that goes inside of your jacket, then a seperate goretex 'shell' that zips up over the outside helping keep the warmth in and hopefully the water out. A bit much for a 5 minute commute but great for longer rides since the jacket has no chance of sliding clear of the cuff.
I can't comment the waterproofing but hopefully they will fare better than my tech roads which were fine in light showers, but disappointing in heavy rain considering they are goretex.
All in all, top glove when it comes to warmth, but a bit fiddly and cumbersome. I was umming and arring at 90 quid, but at 68 I think they are a bargain ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |

If you ride early morning or nighttime no gloves will last more than 20 minutes at national limits, Grips are ok but the outside of your hands will still be cold.
I work nights and have put muffs on my bike (most over my ridding is done between 22:30-23:00 AND 07:00-07:30) and they do the job, dry warm hands I can even get away with summer gloves some times.
Be carefull though I didn't fit mine well and the right one would push the brake lever in if I went over 60, I didn't realise till I went through a set of front pads on my GS in under 1k miles.
In the end I took my bar end bolts out put a whole through the side of the muff then a washer on the bolt and put the throught the muff and screwed it in. ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.

Maplins are having a sale and doing Electric Gloves for a tenner. Doubt they'll protect your hands in a serious off, but at least they'll be warm as you coat the tarmac with your skin.
They're also doing electric waistcoats for 19.99, which are more suitable for biking. Going to try and get down there this week and see if i can try them out.
I love the idea of having to recharge clothing every night. ____________________ A Guide To Powerbands |
