hiya all.

me and my mates are going to go to the nurbergring next year

Ive had a look at the map and it seems the e40 goes all the way to germany. it may be a bit longer but has anyone actually done this route

what other routes have people taken

it seems to confusing over there as they put 2 road names up like e412 and e40 together and it gets very confusing.

any tips

cheers

Haven't done it myself, but I think my stratergy would be to do a town to town route rather than Calais to Nurbergring.

i.e. Calais to Bruxelles, Bruxelles to Leverkusen etc. That is by no way my recommended route, just my recommended method

I've not done it myself, but I'm doing some planning along those lines too - and I agree with alec's sentiment. Here's a couple of options, using ViaMichelin's "Recommended routing" option:
  • Dover-Calais-Nurburgring via Bruges, Brussells, Liege, etc: 269 miles (4h47m)
  • Harwich-Hook of Holland-Nurburgring via Eindhoven, Venlo, etc: 220 miles (3h42m)
Personally, I'd favour an easy route using Harwich, Hook of Holland with perhaps a side-trip to Amsterdam, Nijmegen, then either Eindhoven-Aachen or Venlo-Monchengladbach-Cologne/Bonn to Nurburg. The Aachen route takes you through the High Fens, which should break up the major road grind. Plenty of historic places in the area, too (Remagen, Maastricht, etc).

You could even dodge all the big places in favour of the smaller towns. Depends on whether you want to "express it" to Nurburgring or see the intervening lands you're travelling through. Smile

We went this way to our hotel near the ring, the motorway bits were beyond boring. https://fyad.org/wbbm

I've done the route. During my euro tour.

I got off le shuttle and camped in Dunkurke one night. It then took all day (6+ hours) with stops for food etc.. to get to Klon when I stayed. Then Klon to Nuremburg took about 5 hours with Prague a further 3.

EDIT: ignore i thought you meant Numberg which is the complete otherside of Germany

Across Europe many roads carry a European road reference as well as the country's own because that road crosses borders. E.g. 'A16 E40'

Sometimes the French road numbers can be confusing, especially where you see two or even three road numbers on the same sign. A common one is to get an "A" and an “E” number on the same sign, for example the A18-E402. A18 is the French autoroute number, E402 is the road this becomes heads into another European country. Less common, but more confusing is where roads join and numbers combine temporarily, for example you may see road number A15-N14-D55. This would mean that these roads all follow the same route at this point, so if you’re following the N14, you’re still on the right road.

I've done the E40 pretty much all of the way from Calais to the general area of the Nurburgring. It is a long boring ride but dead easy to navigate.

You can take a ferry to Rotterdam and ride down to the Ring from there which is a shorter route but if you sail to Rotterdam it normally involves two overnight ferry crossings (one each way) and not only does this increase the length of your overall trip, but the ferries aren't exactly cheap.

It is certainly possible to get from the Midlands here to the Nurburgring in one day, without it being as excessively long day. Thumbs Up

Only took the E40 as far as Brussells where I turned off towards Luxembourg rather than carrying on to Leige. Not much to say, it's a motorway and it's toll free, bit round Brussells can be busy but easy to navigate. Just follow place names aswell as just road names, Brussells is posted all the way from Dunkerque, then Leige etc

For those who are unaware, my understanding is that E-routes cover all of Europe (and some of Central Asia) - using motorways and A-roads - and pay little heed to natural or bureaucratic borders. UK and Eire major roads have E-numbers, too - they're just not signposted (who knew?). The E5 route goes from Glasgow to Algeciras. If the number is EVEN then it's an east/west route, and if the number is ODD then it's an north/south route. More on this here and here.

Seems like a great idea to me. Smile Just a shame some countries obstinately refuse to play ball, causing needless confusion for people coming from or going to those countries. But, I guess that's what we do whenever possible when it comes to Europe... Sad

I had a look at a route a while back but just couldn't afford it.

I was going to do any route through France, Belgium, Luxembourg then Germany, just to say I'd done 5 countries in one day! Might be as bit of a pain of a route but an interesting claim to be able to make!!

Don't forget that going via Dover through France etc means that you spend a lot more on fuel. Thus the actual price difference of taking the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam isn't that great, especially if you and some mates go and you all share a cabin on the ferry. Thumbs Up
