Car insurance is a FUCKHEAD! I started driving as soon as I turned 17 and got arse raped on a 1999 1.2 16v corsa, something like £2200 tpf+t. Quit the policy half way through for the bike so have no ncb to my name. Winter is coming now so I started looking for a car again, nothing special, but at least bearable. And these prices are a fucking joke. why am I going to pay 2 grand to insure a 500 quid car on an M plate, why am I going to do that? I'm not getting raped again because the insurance company's cock is just too big for me to handle paying nearly 200 quid a month again. Don't want to ride through the winter as i'm a pussy with the cold, anything below 20 degrees celcius is freezing. So frustrating, really don't blame people for driving around without insurance. And fuck directline with their named drivers gain no claims, (when they take out a directline policy) it's still extortionate with 1 year's no claims. Fuck. Anyway, any young drivers here who are with a good insurance company, like one of the lesser known ones, and are getting a good price?

It's so unfair Sad
This is usually the part where I would start going off on one, but I have far too much to say on the whole subject so i'm going to fight the almost overwhelming temptation to let rip.

EDIT: Matthie, I really don't take well to being cold, been there, done that, fucking hate it.

A little more constructively... try getting quotes on the type of cars that 17 year olds don't usually drive. Think sensible old person cars that don't get wrapped round trees by jolly teens and you might find they're actually a bit cheaper due to them being 'lower risk'.

Also try adding a grown up to your insurance as a named driver, can knock loads off.

My 18yo brother in law did the same, got a quote for £2000, bought it. Dick head.

I passed my test at 19, first quote on a gay old Rover was £1500. Phoned about 40 companies, (found out most were the same just branded with different names) got it down to £1100. Did my pass plus got it down to £850. Bought it.

It will take fucking ages to hunt down a sub grand quote for a new driver, but seek and ye shall find. Phone or apply on line to every single solitary company available.

I nearly gave up on my NSR insurance until the twentieth company I rang way over a grand cheaper than everyone else.

The first twenty quotes you get are odds on to be shite. Can't be arsed looking then get the lube 'cos it'll hurt like hell!!!

Also, seriously try ringing around. If you try all the normal insurance comparison sites (also try the tesco one, I got some good quotes there) and then ring them all up and set them off against each other. My renewal this year for me as a 22yr old with a 1.6 106 XS with 3 yrs NCB, 1 accident 4 yrs ago and being kept on the road was £430ish, I got it down to £210ish just by ringing around. Don't believe the lying adverts on TV telling you it's cheaper to get insurance online!

edit: yeah, what carl said.

Frontera Sport RS 2.2 Petrol. £350. Thought I'd join in and rub it in.

At least there are some benefits to getting older. Can't shag 16 year olds any more but can afford to insure a car I can't afford petrol for!!

Are you really not bothered about what you'll be driving ? If so, get a Fiat Cinquecento / Seicento 900cc. Properly slow, but they have heaters and IIRC insurance group 1. Or I think Sportings are ins group 3.

I hear what you are saying about the reasons why people drive round with no insurance. I've always said insurance should be regulated in this country, as it is a legal requirement it can be the difference to some people being able to afford to drive or not.

And it doesn't get much better until your 25. Mine is about £1500 I think, and that's with 7 years NCB! My licence is a bit of mess though Embarassed

I'm 23. I can insure cars for good money and shag 16 year olds. Life is good.

Anyway, on the insurance angle - paying 2 grand just to be warmer travelling to work over winter isn't a great idea, unless you make/have a lot of money. Seeing as you are 17 and not Palmer, I doubt that this is the case.

Serious, grown up suggestion - take the train. Get a car when you can afford to own it.

We're predicted a mild winter, which is good if you choose to ride over winter. I did when I was your age, after the first few really cold mornings you'll find the cold doesn't get to you so much.

I highly recommend getting a little older, and making more money. The two tend to go hand in hand.

I had a modified 1.4 Corsa SRi (so in the eyes of the insurance, the sporty faster model), all mods declared with 0ncb for £900 FC at 18!

How?

If I'm a named driver how are they going to prove that I have been driving it all year?

Except this.

But more constructively, I echo whoever above mentioned getting something that isn't a small hatchback. Statistically, the most likely group of people to crash are young males driving small hatchbacks. You are a young male, intending to drive a small hatchback.

Go and find a small saloon instead, or a deeply uncool mini MPV, or a hairdresser's Vitara, or even a classic car like an MGB, as it'll take your name off the list that brings up a flashing red beacon at an insurance company.

24 and driving a 5.7 V8 and its 400 fully comp (without using my NCB) so Middle Finger Razz Middle Finger

As everyone else has said, don't go for a learner car or typical youth one, they're highly crashed and so cost more than a car favoured by old people, try a Rover saloon or something. I remember when I was 20 my Impreza insurance was half the price of a 306 Diesel, that can't possibly be down to anything other than crash statistics.

I agree what has been said above, I first insured myself a 1.9 diesel Peugeot, and that was under £600TPFT and I was 22.

I now drive a 1.8 Turbo Skoda, and thats even cheaper!
Don't go for run of the mill cars like Fiestas, or Corsas etc, as they are higher risk. If I downgraded to a 1.4 Fiesta, it'd cost me £80 more on insurance!

There's teams dedicated to stopping insurance fronting, you'll probably ring alarm bells just by being a named driver on your dads policy.

For what it's worth, I hope you get caught.
