....... well no not really. A lack of understanding may better describe it.

A couple of hours ride into the Goole, Humberside area today and I tagged onto the back of a couple of guys, one on an R1 the other on a Gixxer thou. Had fun on the NSL twisties with them for a good many miles.

We hit the 30 zones and slowed to 30ish when these guys started to do the slow mo zig zag manoeuver. You know the one right? You throw your bike left to right much as a formula 1 race car driver would whilst on his formation lap.

Now I've been known to do this myself at times. I don't know why. Maybe its my subconscious telling me that It must be done to keep tyre warmth up or maybe me just trying to look all pro MotoGP racer-esque.

Why do people do the slow mo zig zag when entering built up restricted speed areas?

Karma for the most scientificaly plausible answer.... Razz

Boredom, warming the tyres (though I'd never admit that one) and scaring the shit out of your pillion.

Mostly boredom though.

While you see it done in a lot of cases, accelerating and braking hard will warm the tyres a fair bit more than the weaving.

I just normally keep my eyes closed for as long as possible to stave off boredom, or practice wheelies Smile

It's been shown that this has NO effect on warming your tyres on the street.. A complete & utter waste of time that only serves to make the rider look like a completely clueless idiot.

I do it as well but not only in low speed zones. Mostly for me tis a boredom thing and the curious looks you get from passing cagers.

I also tend to do it a bit if I've run through some crap that has stuck to my tyres. I'd prefer to get it off like that then on the next corner where it may have adverse effects Shocked

For for it's mostly to remind yourself what the bike feels like. You know, keep the brain making a very obvious connection between what your body does and what the bike does in response. Stops you getting complacent. Keeps your mind occupied.

But also it's practice in case a line of ducks/badgers/horse turds/ appear in the middle of the lane, and I have to swerve them all.

Boredom and stuff aside, it's quite defensible behaviour... The human eye is drawn to movement and by swerving from side to side, any cagers pulling out of side streets will instantly be drawn to your movement and will be less likely to pull out on you! Thumbs Up

True that.

Guess it's also not a bad idea to practice the occasional swerve just in case you find yourself in the need when least expected.
Kinda like practicing emergency braking, because we all do that Wink

I do it:

1/ to slow the bike down without braking or to be more precise to maintain speed without closing the two second gap.

2/ to do the "lateral movement attracts attention" thing I learnt of BCF, G I think.

I notice nobody has said they do it because they're pissed... Laughing

I don't do it, although do habitually weave in and out of the big arrows on the road if there's a lane split.

Thumbs Up

Proberly trying to relieve the pressure on their Goole'ies Laughing

Sometimes do it if i notice i've been through some oil on the road, so help clean it off the sides a bit.
Other than that it has no purpose other than to make people look at you.
Never a bad thing Thumbs Up
