Posted: 14:30 - 06 Oct 2008 Post subject: Looking at two cars tomorrow, help me decide |
 |
|
I'm literally 50/50 on both & it's annoying me, both forums are biased towards each car so i'm leaving it down to BCF
Ok, a 1995 FTO GPX manual or a 1995 MR2 N/A, both similar in speed and the Toyota has RWD which some say is a fun quality in a car.
I like the looks of the Mitsubishi better but insurance is £20 a month cheaper on the Toyota, the Toyota is also closer. I dislike the look of the MR2's at the side, & the FTO has better interior & engine noise, i love the driving position of the MR2 but not keen on the aged interior.
You see, i'm torn. Both are immaculate with FSH.
Both are the same price.
Help.

I can say why the MR2 is better in a mere three characters
RWD.
To add to that, its mid engined, its a Toyota. You aren't going to get another mid engined car for the money. The next thing up is really an entry level ferrari or something...
THAT is not a 1995 MR2 though, that is a 1998. I can tell because (as well as the numberplate) it has the newer 'combat' spoiler and the round spoke 15" rims. Those rims are now lost in the mists of time at Toyota, and they deny ever having made them. Just try to ask a Toyota dealer for a replacement!
The 1995 car will have the uglier square spoke wheels (if its still on OE rims) but will have the prettier spoiler. The MR2 is a flipping awesome car and I loved mine. It was just the practicality thing that made me sell. Also, as Babyyam says it has pop up headlights, and they've been banned on new cars due to regulations regarding the safety of pedestrians.
Go for the '2!
Which MR2 forums do you go on? There are three that I know of, the MR2OC (owners club) Who are all into 'modding' and are very chavvy... the MR2DC (Drivers club) who are into 'standard everything' and are very grumpy, and the IMOC (International MR2 Owners Club) who are all pretty cool.
FTO, Front wheel drive crap. Looks pretty but can't walk the walk IMO. Although it does have rear seats. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

Thank you! I took the pic from a forum, not the one i'm seeing although it's the same bar the spoiler/wheels (i quite like the square wheels)
That's just what i needed to hear. I post on mr2oc, & yes they do like modding a fair bit, but good info & cool people, will check the other one's out.

I meant the FTO but thanks for the infomation anyway, i've heard Toyota are one of the best.
Can you tell me about the performance of the N/A, i know it's no turbo but coming from a 110bhp Golf, will i feel the difference? I hear the later models are around 170bhp.
Tiff Needle seemed to enjoy it on the early 90s top gear review. |

The performance is good, but it isn't the straight line stuff that really makes it worthwhile, its the cornering. I used to take huge liberties in mine (once I'd ditched the four year old Yokohama ditchfinders) I even managed to controllably drift it... once! It felt very quick compared to my 130bhp Mazda MX3 I used to own, but my Subaru blows it into the weeds in a straight line. I could beat pretty much any car off of the lights short of a scooby/evo or an M3 or something. Its surprising how many cars on the road actually make less power than a 170bhp MR2. The 1995 cars were *slightly* more powerful than the later cars because of emissions regs too.
If you want a truly eye-popping experience, I'd suggest looking for a Turbo MR2, but they are a *bit* more of a handful in corners and they have a number of turbo related reliability issues. They weigh about the same as the scooby though, and have about the same kind of standard power. They should be a bit quicker too due to not having to drag a load of four wheel drive diffs around with it.
Forget the FTO unless you like the terms 'understeer' and 'Torque steer' These aren't nice controllable traits, unlike oversteer which is perfectly controllable (once you're used to it! ) . ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

Thanks a lot, when driven properly i've heard about the cornering abilities as you say, even watched a few drifing sessions on youtube.
The turbo i'd really want but insurance isn't too kind & for my money i'd only be able to get an early rev 1/2, & i really like the upgrades that the rev 3+.
So i think i've decided on the car from the obvious comments. |

Not seeing a lot of love for the FTO considering it's supposed to be one of the best handling front-drive cars money can buy, and that the V6 versions sound fantastic. They're also a lot rarer so you wouldn't blend into the background like you would with the MR2.
Don't get me wrong, I like the MR2 (and out of the two, only MR2s are available in my budget, as most FTOs are more expensive) and it's probably the prettier car to most eyes (mine included) but the FTO is getting unfairly criticised here
That said... get the MR2. You'll have a hell of a less job getting it serviced, and it'll be cheaper too. ____________________ TARMAC - Automotive blog *UPDATED 26/3/09 - Abandoned fuel stations to go electric? ~ Buy my eBay stuff!

I like the FTO, they arent massively quick, but has 197bhp standard vs the mr2 170. Personally although the MR2 is rwd, i just wouldnt have one, interior is horrible, i want to be in a comfy nice environment. FTO is comfy, doesnt really have rear seats though, they do make a lovely noise, and very reliable, mate drove his from wales to nurburgring, and back without a hitch. However plugger147 the FTO was built and designed before the Hyundai coupe, so not sure how you figured out it had hyundai styling??? Technically the FTO even predates the MR2 from the early 70s galant FTO...FTO probably all around better car than the MR2, much rarer aswell MR2s are ten a penny, but like said the FTO is fwd, even so, lower them they still go quite quick and handle very well.
The exhaust can fall apart on any car, having an exhaust fall off a car after being on there for 8-14 years does happen, and if it had a new exhaust perhaps it was poorly built or fitted?? Interior bits do break, usually the glove box though, again the car is going to be over 8 years old....To be fair sounds like your brothers misses bought a complete dog of a car, as the FTO is pretty much bullet proof.....
Its up to you though choice of, rwd mid mount 170bhp mr2 which will just be an mr2 at the end of the day, rarely get any looks, i know i never give an mr2 a second glance or a first really, or brilliant handling 200bhp coupe which stands out in the crowd people will always ask what it is, how quick it is, mitsi reliability
Sticking up for the FTO aswell, as it is getting alot of critiscm from people who have probably never even driven one, they are brilliant for FWD, my mates will keep up with my car through the twisties and mines 4wd with 100bhp more than his |

I wanted an FTO, but they're supposed to be overcomplicated, underpowered, and crap
Get the MR2, I would if I could live with a 2 seater |
