Hey!
So my A2 is booked on the 15th November(My 17th birthday xD)
Passed my theory a week back. So once i pass(Hopefully) I will be looking for a Bigger bike, My Big bike fund stands at £1475
I'm thinking a 400 - 600 cc
I have looked into 125cc Bikes deeply and have a view on The standard of the bikes, But I haven't stepped into the bigger bike world and i thought this would be a great way to start. All advise is welcome

Side note: If you could give me some information on the 33bhp restrictions that would be awesome, Do they affect the top end, the acceleration, or even economy.

Many thanks
Jerwood

i suggest putting your test back. the first day you ride a 125 will be the day of your test? you won't have enough idea of power or handling on roads to competently ride. of course you'll ignore my advice and do it anyway though...

the 33bhp restriction will limit top speed mostly, possibly torque. some bikes take to it better than others. sports tourers dont mind it but 600 sports hate restriction. 400 sports bikes such as the VFR and CBR will take quite well to it.

By the time you finish your training, you will be bored of the speed of a cg so definatly look bigger than 125's.
Restriction takes away the top end of the rev range.
If you buy an inline 4, then where the powerband kicks in above a certain rpm, most of that will be a big flat spot.
33bhp is still good for about 90/100mph though.
Acelaration is decent enough to out run most cars.
I would go for either an Suzuki SV650, its a v-twin so will take the restriction better because the power is all low down in the rev range.
Or a Honda Hornet, both are withing your budget and are relativy cheap to insure.

Edit congrats on the theory.

It depends what he has been riding before he gets on the CG. I'm not bored of my RX-S, it's loads of fun. I never got bored of my scooter in the 1 year I owned it and I rode it more than my RX-S when they were both insured at the same time for 3 months.

It differs from person to person. If they are obsessed with speed then yes, you'll probably get bored of it.

Fair point mate.
I am a bit of a speed freak.

Yea he is great, can't remember what his pass rate was but it was pretty high. Above 90% 1st time pass, and he's cheapest in our area.

If I could start again, I would definatly go for one of the above.
If your planning on keeping the restrictors in, go for the SV, if not Hornet.
Both are quick enough, but not too quick.

Do you mean my zx4 or a zxr 400?

I bought my ZX4 in November last year needing a respray ready for when I did my test in January, its ended up being completely stripped down by a garage, frame, wheels everything powdercoated, engine sandblasted, and I still haven't rode it so can't really comment on 400's as I haven't rode on.

But from looking at stats, it is about the same bhp as my XJ, but lighter. But the XJ has loads more torque.
It is going to be 100% mint, but I really regret buying it.

A ZXR 400, couple more hp bit more top end.
I wouldn't reccomend one really, parts aren't that hard to come by with ebay ect, but they are more than likely no better than what your replacing.
Finding one in good condition in the first place with low miles is difficult as they are 10/15 year old now, but I think they made them until like 2003 or something, but the newish ones are expensive.
Although they are supposed to be easy to throw around into corners, and about the right power for a new guy.

If you think you can control yourself get a 6, for the money of a 4 which are overpriced you can get a late 90's early 00 bike in better condition with less miles.

But its up to you what you do mate.
