https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7654926.stm Laughing

Quote:
A police weapons specialist who shot himself in the hand is suing the PSNI.

Peter Woods, 50, was dismantling a gun at a police facility in February last year when the accident happened.

It is understood that he removed the magazine from a pistol, but a bullet in the chamber fired into his hand. He recovered from his injury.

Lawyers for Mr Woods claimed in the High Court that proper safety procedures were not in place, and ammunition may have been faulty.

Mr Woods, a civilian weapons maintenance specialist, was injured at the Seapark base in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, in February 2007.

His legal team is arguing that a proper risk assessment was not carried out and a second person should have been present to reduce the accident risk.

The case was adjourned until next week, when police witnesses are expected to appear before the court.

If a gun expert needs someone to hold his hand and remind him not to shoot himself the police should have all their weapons taken off them and replaced with water pistols. Idiot. Laughing

The guys legal team say there should have been a second person there. What if the bullet went trough his hand and hit that person and killed them.He would be locked up for murder 2nd.
It would be nice if it was that anti biker cop that was in the room with him. Thumbs Up

He removed the magazine, put a bullet into the chamber and fired into his hand resulting in a mess. He suspect the ammunition could have been faulty, sounds like it worked just fine to me... People will try anything for compensation, if he thought safety wasn't appropriate he shouldn't have been doing anything in the first place so he would be to blame aswell which should mean no compensation. Maybe next time he fires off the action he should simultaneously do a visual inspection of the barrel.

Why should the police have their weapons taken off them because the civilian gun cleaner is stupid enough to place a body part in front of the barrell?

Missed that part.

Take them off them anyway, if we're not allowed anything to defend ourselves with why should they?

The dea vid is planned, he fired a blank to show the kids how easy it was to accidentally fire a gun while playing with it.

Not exactly an "expert" then.

Magazine off, cock, hook and look. Basic weapon handling drills.

He deserved to pop one off into his own face.

*sigh*

That takes me back - happy days!

Obviously just another self-righteous civvie (probably supplementing a service/police pension because he was too crap to proceed to higher rank and so took early retirement) who wasn't quite as smart as he thought he was.

I thought one of the first things drilled into you in any service was to treat every gun as loaded with live ammunition, and to always point them in a safe direction when unloading?

Just shows if the police cant be trusted not to shoot themselves, they cant really be trusted not to shoot innocent members of the public.

As mentioned, by everyone else his expertise does seem to be a bit lacking for an 'expert'.

I guess its possible that someone else being present could have prevented the accident although I'm not convinced.

It doesnt really seem fair for him to profit for shooting himself in the hand, when he is supposed to be trustworthy enough to handle firearms himself.

I once went to a gun club where I was allowed to shoot a .22 semi automatic pistol. There was minimal training and minimal supervision although it was the first and only time I'd used a gun. I was never in danger of shooting myself as the gun was never pointed at me. How the 'gun expert' managed to fuck up, is a bit mystifying.

He was a civvy cleaning it, not exactly hard to shoot your hand is it.

He is a gun expert, much like a mechanic. You could know every single part on a bike and how everything works, but not even own a bike licence.

More people die in car crashes than getting shot by coppers, how about the government bans cars, bans motorbikes and all lorrys. Then no one gets hurt and we can all skip into the sunset hand in hand loving how we are all so safe.

I'd rather police carry guns and possibly stop someone blowing themselves up or shooting someone, than have no threat at all and leave us open to attack all the time. Then again im pro police so no matter what i say i'll still get slated.

You would think a expert would at least know to check the camber before cleaning it though. I think even i would do that and ive never used a gun in my life.

There more car on the road than there is police with guns though

Its happened and they shot someone who was innocent. How would you feel if that was your brother or whatever.

hurricanehollis wrote:

Nar i have no problem with the police in genral i just have a problem with the arseholes that abuse there power and talk down to you (Yes i know a lot of the police arn't like that but there are some). If you had a builder come to your house to do a job and he starts talking down to you would think he is a arsehole, but if its police a lot of people seem to think its ok because he has a tough job.

Plus you can't really defend this guy he was obviously stupid Laughing. And hes just trying to get a big pay out which i cant really blame as a lot of people would try it ahah and the only reason he is in the news is because its a police officer and its guns instead of some joiner that had a accident with some saw.

Yeah he is a complete twonk, probably just being lazy thinking it would be fine like every other time.

1 thing about the Brazlian that got shot, he was actually working here illegaly and not paying tax. He was going to get caught out doing that one way or another, unfortunately he paid the ultimate price.

This country is in enough debt as it is, let alone wankers working/staying here and not paying tax.

Obviously he didn't deserve to die, but in my eyes i have no sympathy for him because he was breaking the law. Technically no one was shot because he wasn't in the country paying tax so was unknown, but there you go. Shit happens.

Bit harsh really yes he shouldn't have been here but he shouldn't have been shot and he is already paying taxes since we pay taxes on everything we buy and he obviously can't claim anything or use anything liks the nhs since it would probably flag up he not one some list so really where getting something for nothing.

He isn't a police officer, just employed by the police force. Like the cleaners.

All the best

He was going to get shot whether he was an illegal immigrant or not. They could have caught him out for that if they stopped and spoke to him before they blew his head off.

No sympathy for the unknown... Thinking

Whenever everyone gets their ID cards/chips will it be ok to shoot anyone down that doesn't have one? They'll be criminals and when you look at it closely they didn't actually exist so nothing would have happened.
