I've been usuing my Nc30 Honda on and off for commuting. Lovely little bike and although a bit thirsty and uncomfy its a bit nice to be using everyday.

Sooo, heres the Q, I need a commuter to do mega miles on (18k a year), for all year round use. I don't need anything fast, just very easy to run and tough. Problem is I only want to spend a couple of grand at most.

Should I;

1. Buy a 125, possible a new Yam YBR125, enjoy 90mpg and just run it into the ground over a couple of years? Surely it'd be good for 35000 miles before needing major attention.

2. Buy a cheaper older bike, maybe a 600 bandit and just live with the higher running costs but be in the same position and need new wheels in a couple of years time?

Remember I have the NC30 for fun and I also have a big fast barge of a car for shopping, very long trips etc.

Commuting is 60 miles daily round trip, A road but I have the option to go cross country (which would be less stress on a 125)

Thoughts please Smile

A Honda cbr600f sounds like what you need? Or maybe a Honda Cb500?

Go for the middle ground, something a bit bigger than a 125 (prices inflated cos of learner demand) and smaller than a Bandit... think 250 or 500 commuter.

I'd buy a CB5 or similar, maybe even a CB250 type thing.

I wouldn't want to do 60 miles a day on a 125!

I'd go for something like a CB500 if you want to keep the petrol costs low - ie a lowish powered twin.

Go for the cheaper, older bike option - bandit/fazer/cb500 etc.
60 miles per day on a 125 sounds like some kind of punishment.

My initial thoughts were of an older style K series Beemer.

Another vote for the CB500. You can pick up low mileage examples for around the grand if you're patient enough :-

My Dad does similar sort of milage and he has a 51 (i think) Transalp. I think he said he gets 56mpg? That is a with a few mods to it though, k&n chopped off cat and dyno jetted. Although he fiddled with the screen for ages because it was really noisy.

Xj600n or diversion.

Cheap to buy, cheap to run, goes okay. If I nun it I can get 66mpg - that's 200 miles to reserve. I usually get mid fifties. Okay it is boring as sin, but it does the job.

Just hack the exhaust off, fit heated grips and you're away.

Seconded.

I've been using mine for about 7 months now, all I've done is chain & sprockets and a rear tyre, used it to get to gigs and commute to work, does the job brilliantly, although it leaks oil out of an over flow pipe in cold weather, not quite sure why. Laughing

There's a mod you can do to stop that - one that I can't be arsed to do. Something to do with the breather pipe collapsing so replace it with a bit of hose to the airbox. Meh.

Get a scottoiler and the chain lasts forever. I'm gonna butcher myself a screen soon and some muffs for when it gets really bloody cold.

Does tap like a b*stard though Laughing

Thanks for lots of varied answers!!

Well I'll be mothballing the Honda shortly for winter so I'll have a good look in the next few months and see what I can find.

Indeed a bigger bike will be the way forward, I just get tempted with 125 fuel economy sometimes.

Yeah, I did read about a mod when it was happening but it was easier to buy some cheap oil and just keep and eye on it.

Scottoiler is on my list after heated grips and muffs, I'm not getting a screen though, not having one means I don't go too fast on the motorway.

I think the XJ600 is the most under rated bike I've come across, reliable as anything else I've ever had, covers miles effortlessly and cheaply if you keep it under 6/7k, the only time I swore at it was when the chain went but that was my fault for ignoring it.

Step awaaay from the Honda badge....(yes yes, I know I recommended a CB500 and ride a Versys, but it still stands, Honda seem to have a knack of engineering the soul out of a bike)

My KLR650 would at times get up to about 80mpg; and I'd choose something like that over a 125 any day. The 500s generally aren't too bad.

Ride a bigger bike at the 125cc flat-out speeds and you'll undoubtably get a bit better fuel economy too.

So true.

I used to get 45 - 50mpg on a ZX9 commuting 140 miles a day. On the motorway a steady 70mph is 4000rpm.

Why? I wasn't recommending it for myself? It'd be perfect for the distance / weather at the moment.

I'm getting rid of the bike as it's impractical, the weather has been shocking and it's doing my tits in trying to find a new place to live that will accomodate it securely, I'll get another one next year when I'm all sorted Wink

3rd'ed

You need to take tank off and clean out the air box. Also take the breather pipe of the crankcase and clean it out, bet its full of white gunk. Needs doing about twice a year Rolling Eyes
You need at least a 30 mile run to get the oil hot enough to blast the water out when its really cold. Not got that bad yet.
Helps if you keep bike on c/s instead of side stand Thumbs Up
