Another insurance question - TPTF or fully comp?

Hi all me again with another insurance question.

Who here is TPFT and who is fully comp?

I have had a quote from Devitt this morning and they have quoted me -

Cover: Comprehensive

Price: £241.84

Compulsory Excess: £75.00

or...

Cover: Third Party Fire & Theft

Price: £120.76

Compulsory Excess: £75.00.


My bike cost me £560 (Honda CG 125), i am 21, no claims on my last bike (moped) but was over 2 years ago so generally means nothing now.

Which one would you go for, and why?

TPFT. If you has an at fault crash they'd instantly write the bike off anyway. It would just be cheaper and easier for you to fix it yourself. CG125 spares are plentiful.

I would go fully comp

My son had his YBR 125 stolen a few weeks ago he was TPTF they have written the bike off he is now out of pocket due to the excess what was left to pay for the bike ( 1 Nov 07 ) what the bike cost now


Just watin to see what the insurance company are doin and if he can buy the bike back not sure how much they would want or what to offer

When I had my bike stolen many years ago because I was fully comp they just gave me a new bike also bought the old 1 back

How much would a third party only quote be for you?

Of those two, I'd go TPF&T; as Big_ham said the CG125 is a very common bike, and you'd be able to get a lot done yourself for the extra £120 you'd be saving on top of the £75 excess.

Plus, it puts less money into the coffers of the scum, vermin, filth.

Quite likely that someone would be in exactly the same situation with fully comp

It's quite possible just making a claim for a £560 bike will leave you out of pocket in the long run in comparison to just accepting it and buying a new bike.

There's no way I can see it would ever be worth making a claim for damage to your bike on a fully comp policy for a bike of that value.

Where fully comp is useful is if you have an accident which is your fault and the other party is claiming, especially if there's other costs.

I'd go for TPO if I could get it cheaper and use the rest to buy a decent lock.
