SSDs? life times?

This is what wiki says:

erm so how long is 100,000 read/write times? , erm so how does a HDD compare? .... considering each and every one of my PCs has died from HDD failure , I have a feeling me dell is going to fail shortly , since its wayy past its fail date (my HDDs some how never last more than 1 year this dell has lasted 3).



Any thoughts?

MTBF of SSDs and HDDs is generally fairly even these days.

SSD has improved a lot over the last year or so and the lifespan and number of write times has increased a lot since they first came out. The OCZ drives have a claimed "171 years Life expectancy" according to the blurb from OCZ. I still wouldn't buy one until the technology has improved further and the prices have come down a lot more.

What one earth are you doing the them to kill them after a year? Or are you just using cheapo ones?

I always buy the western digital ones and I have had ten over the last decade and never had a single one fail. I usually keep them for about 4 years or so and then replace them with bigger, better and faster ones. The Raptors and the normal hard drives with model numbers ending with YS all have 5 year warranties and are built to last. My brother sent one back a few years back, not because it had died, but because he left it on a window ledge with the window open and it got wet (he just told them it stopped working), they replaced this no questions asked.

Get a decent non SSD drive for now and wait for the technology to mature and the prices to drop on SSDs.

Thanks, nah the thing is me EEEPC came with an SSD built in I'm just curious as to how long it will last compared to HDDs, in that some people I've known to have HDDs last for years in university they had PCs with HDDs which were nigh 13 years old, but for some reason mine never last long a year tops.

I keep them in a cool room and keep them to a surge protected power source , I often use maxtors , they work fine for a year then clunk clunk clunk uh oh.... must have about 10 desk top PCs which have had 2-3 HDDs in them each all die like that... prebuilt PCs are probably the worst in this regard.

The WD VelociRaptor drives are really good if a tad expensive, price is about £1 per gb.
I have one which holds my OS and Games, The boot/load times are noticebly quicker

I wonder this too Itchy, I have the EeePC 900 will it last a year? 2? or 6 months, i guess time will tell...
