Let's just say one day we all wake up and there's no electricity, it's gone and doesn't look like it's coming back any time soon. What would happen to society as we know it and who has the skills to survive? Thinking

Well seen as I am doing a degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering I'd be pretty screwed...

I guess there would be quite a bit of looting and the whole money system would probably collapse as know one would be able to get the money of out the banks.

Motor-vehicles wouldn't work as you need a spark for the engine to run. Factories wouldn't work unless there where very traditional ones. I am guess we revert to the old ways of living, co2 emission would probably remain the same, even though cars and factories have stopped working people will have to use fire to cook food, keep warm and for light.

I think people living in the cities would be pretty screwed pretty quickly and it would be best to get quite rural quite quickly as there would be more land available, and useable resources. However I doubt the land owners would just let you on their land. They'd probably say that you have to work their land, if you want to live there and get food. I think everyone would have to trade and Britain would soon run out of resources. I think the survival of the fittest would be a good way to describe this.

To be fair saying if electricity just stopped existing is like saying that gravity just stopped existing.

I think he meant no electricity supply. Not that electricity as a concept would cease to exist.

But yeah, we'd be properly fucked. Within 3 days we'd all regress to walking on all fours and picking the nits out of each others hair.

Do you mean no electical mains, or no electricity whatsoever (i.e all batteries stop working, etc)?

If just no electrical mains, I'd steal a van, loot Asda for supplies and fuck off to the woods in Scotland to live a nomadic lifestyle Laughing

I lived without electricity for 2 weeks when I lived in the middle of no where in Norfolk.

Was very boring, lots of book reading and early nights. Boiling water for washes and cleaning.

Lucky we had a camping stove for food, otherwise it could have been a bit more interesting Laughing

I have access to a steam engine. I'm sure we could hook that up to a dynamo, sorted Laughing

It'd be total bloody chaos within days I suspect.
I'd be alright, I'm too lazy to panic.

Gas probably wouldn't work if there was no leccy Thumbs Up. On the subject of vehicles most older diesels could be modified to run without electricity.

If anyone knows where Ray Mears lives....

then the world would survive!

I imagine people with similar skills to him would survive without problem.

I don't know if I'm weird, but I kind of have fantasies about a 28-days-later type situation happening.

Greedy idiots would die. I, on the other hand, being a hermit, would be able fuck off and live somewhere nice. I'd take my girlfriend, closest friends, and most of my family. Fuck the rest Laughing

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I could make my own electricity, unless the laws of physics were permanently changed, in which case the entire universe would also stop working...

There was a great kids series in the 70s i think, that used that scenario as the premise for the story. IIRC everyone started to revolt against machines, smashing it all up so they could live a more basic, sans-machinery life.

Wish i could remember the name of it, i thought it was called 'Survivors' but i can't find anything on it other than the crap US programme.

I say it was great, but probably it'll be the same as watching the Tripods series again, which was good but full of hilariously bad acting.

Anyway, the first thing i'd do is find a LWB Landy (assuming vehicles still work) throw a decent off roader in the back and then go find a gunshop. Wink

Remember something similar. Based (from very vague memory) around the story of a teenage girl. From memory in part of it living with a group of Sikhs. And with people having dodgy reactions when walking under power lines.

Found this about the series name you mentioned:-

All the best

Survivors was a 70's TV series, I've been looking for torrents of it but no luck so far.

I've been pretty rural for years now and the electricity supply is a bit iffy at some stage most winters. Enough candles and matches to last quite a while. Have a wood burner so I'd be nice and warm and could cook. Used to live in the middle of Scotland and got used to keeping a stocked larder, so food supplies would last for a while plus veggie patch for fresh stuff. Have a bicycle to get about but not sure where there would be to go if there was no electric anywhere.

Reckon I could keep going for about a month in the winter, longer in the summer, before I started to get worried! Would probably worry most about running out of pet food, but I tend to buy about 2 months supply at time, so should be ok....

........dry mix dog/cat food for tea, nom, nom Sick

Thumbs Up

Yeah no mains for whatever reason, short supply of electric all over the place.

Food will probably run out first without being able to produce it at such massive scales as before. I could probably grow some vegetables but doubt I'd have enough to live off and no meat.

Probably a good excuse to grow some weed, could trade it pretty easily.

Would there be shortages of fuel after a while?

If there's no fuel, food will begin to get scarce and if there's no food then crime will probably go up and if crime goes up the army will come out. Civil Contingencies Act etc Shocked

Before we get onto who's are bigger................. Wink Laughing

I think we'd hit the looting and bad crime/rape/vandalism/murderous 'events' quite quickly, shops would be robbed for cash in tills etc and people's possessions would be stolen for a quick rising black market.

In short, if we ran out lecky, we'd be fooked cos there's no quick prep, Humans are too reliant overall on luxuries.

I was readin' this thread and thinking "God, yeah, I would just NOT COPE at all..."

And suddenly (out of the blue) my mate Beebs has just pointed out that somehow I appear to have acquired a copy of Chris Ryan's Ultimate Survival Guide.

So I'll be alright Jack
