I cant believe my luck with this one. Two years hassle free and today I notice my premium has gone up due to a bike change (lower group, older bike Confused )

Phone them up and question it to find out my insurance doesn't run out until may next year. Fair enough I think until I ask how much a new quote would be....

I dont know how but I am currently paying £28.73 a month which I know is well over the top for a 30 year old with 3 yrs no claims on a FJ1200.

How much was the new quote? £82.78 for the whole year Shocked

Logically I said fine, cancel this policy and start me a new one, only to find that I cant cancel it and will have to keep paying the 28 odd quid for the next five months.

Anyone know anything I can do? Any loopholes?

I would rather lose 6 months towards no claims and not pay the £143.65 remaining when I can get the whole year paid off now for £82.78

Thumbs Up Karma

If you're paying monthly you'll probably have a cancellation charge which may well make it cheaper to stick with the current policy

Hi

Situation with the monthly payments is that it is probably set up that you have taken out a loan to pay the premium up front and are now paying the loan company £28.73. You probably can cancel but with only 5 months remaining you would probably only get a small amount back (at a guess probably 20% of the initial premium not including the extra cost of paying it monthly), then probably knock off Bennetts £30 admin fee.

So if the £28.73 is paid monthly for 10 months that is a yearly premium of £287.30. Say £250 before the charges for paying monthly. So if 20% is right you would get back £50, minus their £30 admin charge leaves you getting back £20. Except that means you haven't yet paid them that much in the monthly payments (ie, £287.30 - £20 = £267.30, you have paid 7 months at £28.73 is only £201.11) so have to pay more.

Figures very rough but hope they illustrate the scam that they are running.

Oh, and having a quick google to try and find their cancellation fees I found this bady placed advert Laughing :-

All the best

Cancellation charges are quite often £50...so you might as well carry on and get the extra years no claims. Then change providers when the current policy expires.

It does suck though - there all crooks.

Bennett's always try and rip you off on the renewal and it always goes up. I got a renewal for my scooter of £400 TPO but if you did a brand new online quote it was only £220. It cost me £260 last year.

I got ripped off by the same sort of scam when trying to change bikes. It was going to cost me to cancel the policy, what a joke! Wasn't even on a monthly scheme (so no finance company involved), I had paid in full at the start!

I kicked up a fuss with Equity Red Star as Bennetts had told me they wouldn't insure my type of bike (was going from a 125 to a 500) which I was informed was a load of cr*p. Managed to get a £62 refund in the end (admin charge was waived). I will still never use them again though, I also advise any friends and family not to use them either. So they have lost quite a lot of business over a stupid issue that could have been easily solved.

Eh? Great rule of thumb.
Plan all bike sales and purchases around your policy renewal date.

Thanks for that. Thumbs Up

I will never use Bennetts again (after my insurance runs out!).

Same thing happened to me, got my renewal through the post to tell me the cost had gone up £100 a year, gave india a call to ask why, they couldn't explain so I went through it all again with someone else who I could understand and ended up knocking £105 off the renewal quote with a lower excess Shocked
Why didn't they just do that in the first place???????

Off to someone else when the policy expires next year!!

My rule is if anyone with anything other than a British accent answers the phone, then just hang up. They do their job from a text book and it's a complete waste of time.

Get someone from the UK and they have the miraculous ability to use a bit of nouse and make their own decisions to get your custom. Always get a better price and package that way I find.

Because there are mugs out there who just keep paying each year without question......

You will find just the same no matter where you go.

As to the OP.
You are now in a credit agreement to pay off the full amount of the policy and the interest.
If you can't afford to pay for the whole year look at seeing if you can get a bank loan. As it will be cheaper and you will be able to pay it off early if you can afford it.

Quote:
Renewal Arrangement Fee
When you renew your policy, a non-refundable fee of up to £30.00 may apply.

Now that is the biggest piss take of all time........

As Minty implies, some fucked up rule. Rolling Eyes

I'll change when I want and if they don't like it, plenty more insurers will. Thumbs Up

H everyone, cheers for the advice. I think I will just leave it for now and chalk it down to a expensive lesson learnt.

What really pees me off is I could have paid it all off in full at the start of the year but thought it would be more sensible to pay monthly. (kicks ones own arse)

Carole Nash, here I come next year!
