'sigh'
why do all of these new rider insist on de-restricting there new 125's so they are illegally on the road, you have no insurance, and if you get pulled by plod, he can crush your bike and take your licence away, and you get fined aswell.
why not just learn to ride on a 'legal' bike and then get a bigger bike with more power when you pass your test, its a 125, its never going to be going 150 miles an hour.
but at the end of the day its your choice, i for one don't want to de-restrict mine for those reasons, as i like having a licence and dont want to have to buy a new bike/CBT
anyway, back on topic, i have just bought a 2003 NSR125R, and i do have to say, it is a VERY good looking bike for a 125. dont know about the TZR as have only seen them on ebay and they are quite old now whereas the NSR stopped being made in 2001 (mine is a 2003 but thats cos honda still had stock left over from 01), but my money would go with the NSR. and it did |

If you're getting a 125, go for 2-stroke.
Every 125 2-stroke i've ridden has been fun, and every 4-stroke has been tedious.
Definately worth the extra petrol and maintainence for the extra fun, though i had an NSR for 2 years and didn't need to do any maintenance other than oiling the chain.

depends what you need the bike for ?
commuting everyday and regular raggings tzr, comutting a bit and raggins then nsr
the teezers got a iron bore and same engine as the dt , this means cheap parts are cheap and you can rag it without worrying too much , everytime my nsr passes 11k rpm i get a mental image of me handing over a big wad of cash for a new nicasil plated bore
plus search dt on ebay , loads of cheap spare parts avaliable
of course the nsr is faster though |

Hi
2 stroke maintenance is different, and possibly less than a 4 stroke. Oil changes are less frequent. No valves to adjust. No oil filter to change. No cam chain to adjust. A simple 2 stroke is far less maintenance intensive than a simple 4 stroke.
Problem comes with 2 strokes which are designed to have a very high state of tune. Such as the RS125. The NSR (and TZR) produce less power, but are also designed for this (while the RS these days does produce less power, that is more down to less efficient exhausts, etc, it still has the massive exhaust port with no supporting bridge).
Personally the only small 4 strokes I have ridden I have not liked. While the 2 strokes have been fun.
All the best
