Hi everyone,

I am trying to get gear oil for the winter for a little 2 stroke 50cc scooter. My manual says to get 85-90 gear oil.

However I have been to a few shops and the closest I can find to that is 80w-90 gear oil.

One of the motorbike shop employees said that that would be fine, but I am looking for a second (unbiased) opinion.

Can anyone tell me if this is a good alternative?

80w-90w covers what you need if you're after 85w-90w, should be fine. would ask in the workshop forum tho, some of the dudes in there really know what they're on about.

The way oil that the oil measured is viscosity (80w-90 or 85w-90) is graded by measuring the time it takes for a standard amount of oil to flow through a standard orifice, at standard temperature. The longer it takes, the higher the viscosity. e.g. 80W will become more thin at 100C that 85W.

I would call the dealer and ask what oil they would recommand, purchase it from there or elsewhere... prices are normally high in dealers.
